spike lee (mookie 20 years later)*As we reported earlier, Spike Lee has a new joint coming out this Summer called “Red Hook Summer.” In fact, it will be in theaters in late August.

We recently saw a screening of “Red Hook Summer” and all we can say is that if you’re a Spike Lee fan, he’s going to be your hero all over again. The film, while not perfect in a lot ways is still incredible.

Basically, it tells the story of Flik Royale, an introspective youngster from middle-class Atlanta who has come to spend the summer with his deeply religious grandfather, Bishop Enoch Rouse, in the housing projects of Red Hook.  Having never met before, things quickly get off on the wrong foot as Bishop Enoch relentlessly attempts to convert Flik into a follower of Jesus Christ.

Needless to say, things don’t go so well for young Flik until he meets and develops a friendship with Chazz Morningstar, a  girl who’s his age. Gradually between the love of Miss Chaz and and his Grandfather, Flik starts too see Brooklyn and the world in a better light.

But there’s something else going on and when it happens it will shock the crap out of you. Yep, it’s got one of those out of left field moments that’ll have you talking about the film for days. Of course we wouldn’t dare reveal what that out of left field moment is because it would be an obvious spoiler. All we can say is that “Red Hook Summer” is one film we highly recommend you see.

However, there is one thing we can share with you. Twenty years later, Spike’s character Mookie from “Do the Right Thing” is back in “Red Hook” as well. And yes, he’s still delivering Sal’s pizzas.

Speaking of which, in an exclusive clip, spotted at MTV, the Flik Royale character, played by Jules Brown, interviews Mookie (Spike) as he talks about how he put his son through college through his 20 years of delivering pizzas and the proper technique for keeping the cheese in place while delivering. Great stuff. Watch.
