Mitt Romney Calls Obama Voters ‘Victims’ in Secret Video

In brief remarks to reporters, Romney said his comments were not “elegantly stated” and “spoken off the cuff” during a fundraiser months ago. But his point, he said, is that Obama relies on the government to help people while his approach is rooted in free enterprise. Romney said Obama’s approach is “attractive to people who do not pay taxes.”

The video was obtained by the magazine Mother Jones, which said it came from a source who shot the video at a donor event at the Boca Raton, Fla., home of Marc Leder, a private equity manager. Reaction to it blew up as Romney tried to reset his campaign, amid polls showing he is trailing Obama.

Obama campaign manager Jim Messina called Romney’s taped comments “shocking.”

Here is one of Romney’s quotes from the video:

“There are 47% of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47% who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it. That that’s an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what.”

  1. there seems to be more video surfacing…death by a million tiny cuts…”The magazine Mother Jones, which published the Romney video, posted another clip today in which the candidate says Palestinians have “no interest whatsoever in establishing peace.”..too funny

  2. Judging from comments on Utah sites, it wouldn’t surprise me if the Cyborg does not carry their flag ship state. Can’t wait for Nov. 6!

  3. That’s right Mitty…keep digging that ditch!

  4. This is why Romney will win. If Romney plays this right the mainstream media will finally not be able to ignore what this election is truly about.

    • Ok russ, I get being the black sheep but what you wrote doesn’t make much sense at all.

Romney will win because of [insert this current story] but you hope the media will realize that the election is really about [insert whatever you think it's about].

      • What Romney said was nothing new. The tone at the meeting is different than when he said it on the campaign trail. Why do you think conservatives want Obama gone? Because he is Black? Keep believing that narrative.

        • I agree, it’s nothing new and it’s a consistent talking point among conservatives.

But my question was not about how consistent his message is…it’s why do you think THIS is why Romney will win.

Conservatives want Obama gone in part because he’s a democrat, they don’t trust him, and yes, because he’s black. The latter isn’t a narrative. It’s a rather logical conclusion.

          • The reason I think he will win is because the liberal press has been playing the distraction game from day one. If Romney takes a defensive approach on this he will get creamed. If he doubles down and speaks directly to the TRUTH he spoke then he will win that debate. This hand by the liberals was played curiously early in the campaign and is a sign that they are desperate. Obama’s reputation was getting hammered this past week so I believe the Liberals were forced to release this tape early to distract. This is going to backfire on them.

This twit is showing his true colors everyday. Everyday he has something negative to say about the poor and minorities in this country. He is making it very clear that he does not give a rat’s azz about us. I tell you this we had better show up again at the polls or we will live with the consequences of not voting in record numbers. This clown is trying to turn this country back hundreds of years we had better WAKE UP!!!!! OBAMA 2012

  6. @BigRuss The reason I think he will win is because the liberal press has been playing the distraction game from day one.

I disagree and should point out that the conservative press has been playing the same game. During the primary, they had a heyday with their overthetop focus on Obama’s birthplace. It was such a distraction that Obama had to actually show his birth certificate. There’s numerous stories like this..on both sides.

If he doubles down and speaks directly to the TRUTH he spoke then he will win that debate.

The problem is that he didn’t speak real “truth” by stating that every Obama voters wants a gov’t handout, will vote for him no matter what, he doesn’t need to appeal to them etc. I don’t see how he could win that debate. Obama surely didn’t win the debate when he argued that white voters cling to their guns and religion.

Obama’s reputation was getting hammered this past week so I believe the Liberals were forced to release this tape early to distract.

So the multiple articles from conservatives criticizing Romney (Noonan, Brooks etc) was an example of “Obama” getting hammered? Romney came out in front of a developing story and fluked it up. Outside of the Ingraham’s and Hannity’s, I haven’t been able to find much supporting your thesis here.

    • “I disagree and should point out that the conservative press has been playing the same game.”

      – I agree that conservative media does the same thing. However, I am speaking in the context of this issue and the liberal press holding water for Obama. They are the ones in a tizzy and trying fan flames. This is just like the Rush/Fluke thing and the Chic-fil-a issue.

“The problem is that he didn’t speak real “truth” by stating that every Obama voters wants a gov’t handout, will vote for him no matter what, he doesn’t need to appeal to them etc. I don’t see how he could win that debate”

      – Romney wins this debate because a high percentage of the 47% (which is actually 49%) get their news and info from the liberal press or are not tuned in at all. This is an opportunity for him to speak directly to this in his words instead of the liberal press characterizing him as not caring. I’m not stupid enough to believe that he does not care from the heart for the poor. He is simply not going to waste election dollars on people he feels is not going to vote for him.

“So the multiple articles from conservatives criticizing Romney (Noonan, Brooks etc) was an example of “Obama” getting hammered?”

      – The criticism of Romney by the press was not what I meant. The world events unfolding in the Middle East is apparent. Right now Obama and the administration have a controversy on their hands on a massive level. The distraction of Romney’s comments is what was needed.

      • However, I am speaking in the context of this issue and the liberal press holding water for Obama.

I agree that the liberal press does hold water for Obama. Specifically in this case, what should the press’s response be to a video where Romney castigates 47% of the election. How should any media outlet be “helpful” in this context? The same liberal media roundly blasted Obama for his SF comments.

This is an opportunity for him to speak directly to this in his words instead of the liberal press characterizing him as not caring.

You’re giving the liberal press way to much authority here. Romney spoke using “direct words.” No such spin is needed here because he dug his own grave. There is nothing in the video which demonstrates that he does “care.” I don’t believe he doesn’t care about the poor either. But that’s not what his recent statements have suggested. Again, this is his own doing…not the media.

Right now Obama and the administration have a controversy on their hands on a massive level. The distraction of Romney’s comments is what was needed.

Sure. Any distraction away from the poor economic/jobs record is exactly what the Obama campaign (or any other) would want. Unfortunately, this distraction, like the aforementioned, are 100% Romney’s fault. Nobody made him come out and make ridiculous accusations when he had no knowledge of the facts. This is his own doing..or undoing depending on your perspective.

        • “Unfortunately, this distraction, like the aforementioned, are 100% Romney’s fault. Nobody made him come out and make ridiculous accusations when he had no knowledge of the facts.”

          – These comments were recorded in May and held until now. Yes, Romney made the comments but for it to be something of a controversy is intellectually ingenuous. The Liberal press knows this.

          • Actually they weren’t. We’re just now hearing about it.

The original youtube clip of the event was posted under Rachel Maddow’s name. She complained to youtube and they since removed it. After journalists had been trying to track down who the person was, the author was put in contact w/someone at The Nation who investigated..and David corn ultimately broke the story.

So there was no “conspiracy’ to hold the comments.

BTW, the ridiculous assumptions Romney made was to attack the president for “apologizing” over this whole Libya event. That was what was 100% his fault. I fault him less for the video because it was a private event.

Did you think the coverage of Obama’s statement were equally intellectually ingenuous?

  7. BigRuss, the conservatives that make up the Washington elite class are not going for Romney. The only cons who are are the racist right-wing radio types. There is no reason for conservatives, especially those on Wall Street, to get Obama out of office. He has continued Bush’s low tax rates, he coddles Wall Street, he is essentially their dream candidate. BlackAgendaReport.com has extensive reporting on how he is actually MORE effective for their cause than his counterpart. He is the perfect shill because people try to paint him the opposite of what his actions show he is. So I hate to break it to you, the mainstream media is not just the liberal press, but also the conservative press, and for the most part, both are going to ensure Obama wins again. Romney is toast.
