NBA Attempting to Make Extra $ By Slapping Ads on Jerseys

lebron james (with red bull advert on jersey)*The NBA is trying something new for the league in an attempt to rake in an extra $100 million a year.

The proposal: make athletes NASCAR racers. Not literally of course. The NBA is considering slapping ads on jerseys like the popular racing league.

“I think it’s likely that we’ll do something, implement something, some sort of plan for the fall,” says NBA deputy commissioner Adam Silver.

“I think it’s fair to say that our teams were excited about the opportunity and think there is potentially a big opportunity in the marketplace to put a two-by-two patch on the shoulder of our jerseys.”

It could be very successful for the league, but extremely distracting for viewers and fans. It may even change commercial jersey buying.

If this proposal is accepted, the NBA will slowly implement the new policy by introducing two-by-two inch patches on the shoulder. These ads will also appear on replica jerseys sold in the stores if all goes according to plan.

  1. Well, this was a foregone conclusion. They started the trend in soccer a few years ago and it would be just a matter of time before other sports such as the NBA and NFL also decide to cash in.

But a “two-by-two patch on the shoulder”?!

Hmmm… I don’t know if advertisers will be satisfied with that, especially when soccer teams have that large odious billboard emblazoned right down the center of their jerseys.

Anyway, I’m kind of glad that the NBA is showing some restraint. Those soccer jerseys kind of lost some of their appeal with that crap all over it.
