The CDC claims that nearly half (48 percent) of all African American women between the ages of 14 and 49 are infected with genital herpes.

About 16 percent of Americans between the ages of 14 and 49 are infected with genital herpes, making it one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases, U.S. health officials said on Tuesday.
Black women had the highest rate of infection at 48 percent and women were nearly twice likely as men to be infected, according to an analysis by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
About 21 percent of women were infected with genital herpes, compared to only 11.5 percent of men, while 39 percent of blacks were infected compared to about 12 percent for whites, the CDC said.
There is no cure for genital herpes, or herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2), which can cause recurrent and painful genital sores and also increases the likelihood of acquiring and transmitting the AIDS virus. It is related to herpes simplex virus 1, or oral herpes, which causes cold sores.

I don’t think this always has to to with men being gay. Men have been gay since the bible. I think it has to do with humans not wanting to talk about sex and disease even though they are having sex all the time. I still see people scared to grab condoms in the store like they made out of dynamite or something lol. Please lets get more educated on this as it is your life at stake.
They are basing this study on what data? So we’re 1st in AIDS and herpes? I don’t believe this data, I think it’s just another way to malign black women. I want to see some data that confirms this. And have they polled the whole black female population come up with this? Somethin’ ain’t clean in the milk…
I don’t know about these specific data, but CDC normally posts their data on their website. CDC is a credible source. Of course there is room for error in their analysis- so instead it being 49% it’s like 45%

I’ve read this twice and the title of this article seems to be rather misleading. According to what the CDC states…there’s nothing that states half of all african-american women have genital herpes. If anything, it says half of the of genital herpes cases. That’s completly different. Still not a good stat, but the numbers are no where near the same. So, why the headline?
Thanks for your comment. I’m thinking, that for every 2 black women you know between these ages, one of them has Herpes. NO WAY. The article states that 1 in 6 Americans have herpes. According to the 2010 census, there 314 million Americans, of which 1 in 6 would be 16-17% or 50-53 million. 48% of this would be 24-25 million. There aren’t even that many black women in America, TOTAL. EUR, the headline of this article is completely wrong and plain irresponsible.
