*With a creative resume that includes acting, writing and filmmaking, Tanya Wright is a gifted artist who is poised to take flight. Although the New York native and Vassar College graduate is perhaps best known for her recurring role as Deputy Kenya Jones on the red-hot HBO series “True Blood,” Wright is also gaining attention for her work off stage with projects that includes her debut novel, “Butterfly Rising,” and directing, producing and starring an award-winning film of the same name.
Next up for Wright is a role in the dramedy, “Why Stop Now,” opposite Jesse Eisenberg, Melissa Leo and Tracy Morgan, after which she will continue to flex her creativity developing her next project, “A Turn to Grace,” a project set against the Harlem Renaissance, which was a semi-finalist in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ annual Nicholl’s Screenwriting Competition. The Robertson Treatment recently caught up with this busy lady to find out how she keeps it all together.
Robertson Treatment: So tell us a bit more about your character on “True Blood.” Do you think she will ever believe that vampires are real?
Tanya Wright: KENYA’S THE TYPE OF WOMAN THAT HAS TO SEE IT, TOUCH IT, TASTE IT AND SEE IT TO MAKE SURE IT’S REAL. UNLESS SOMEONE STRAIGHT SHAPE-SHIFTS IN FRONT OF HER EYES, I DON’T THINK SHE’S GOING FOR IT. BUT WHO KNOWS WHAT’S IN STORE FOR HER FUTURE…
RT: Is there ever going to be peace in Bon Temps?
TW: NO PEACE= FUN!
RT: Tell us about your work on the other side of the camera as a writer/director?
TW: BUTTERFLY RISING IS MY DIRECTORIAL DEBUT; I ALSO WROTE THE BOOK OF THE SAME NAME. IT’S BEEN QUITE AN EXTRAORDINARY JOURNEY FOR ME AND IT’S A PROJECT I MADE WITH MY WHOLE HEART. I LOOK FORWARD TO SHARING THE FILM NATIONWIDE VERY SOON! TO GET THE LATEST, JOIN US ON FACEBOOK ! https://www.facebook.com/pages/Butterfly-Rising/166995178653
RT: And you are also starring in a new film?
TW: YES! LAST SUMMER, I SHOT AN INDEPENDENT FEATURE, PREDISPOSED, WITH MELISSA LEO, JESSE EISENBERG AND TRACEY MORGAN. IT PREMIERED AT SUNDANCE THIS YEAR AND WAS SOLD TO A DISTRIBUTOR SHORTLY THEREAFTER. I HAVEN’T SEEN IT YET; SLATED TO APPEAR IN THEATERS THIS FALL! I’M WORKING ON SEVERAL NEW PROJECTS–A TELEVISION SHOW, FILM AND WEB SERIES. I ENJOY CREATING OPPORTUNITIES FOR OTHERS. I ALSO WORK WITH AN ORGANIZATION–THE MKAPA FOUNDATION–THAT WAS FOUNDED BY THE FORMER PRESIDENT OF TANZANIA, BENJAMIN MKAPA, THAT SERVES THE HEALTH NEEDS OF RURAL TANZANIANS. I THINK IT’S IMPORTANT FOR AFRICAN-AMERICANS TO BE INVOLVED WITH AFRICA. IT IS OUR ORIGINAL HOME.
RT: Which do you prefer – acting, writing or directing?
TW: NO “PREFERENCE”, REALLY. THEY ALL SERVE DIFFERENT PARTS OF ME AND ONE IS JUST AS VITAL AS THE NEXT. ACTING REQUIRES PEOPLE, USES MY BODY AND APPEALS TO MY EXTROVERTED SIDE; WRITING IS THE OPPOSITE IN MANY WAYS–IT’S A WORLD I CAN CREATE COMPLETELY BY MYSELF AND APPEALS TO MY INTROVERT. I ENJOY WATCHING PEOPLE (FOR WRITING), BUT IT’S HARD WHEN THEY’RE WATCHING YOU (AS AN ACTOR). MOSTLY, I LOVE DISCOVERING WHAT MAKES PEOPLE DO THE THINGS THAT THEY DO WITHOUT JUDGEMENT. SOMETIMES, WHEN YOU KNOW SOMEONE’S JOURNEY, YOU HAVE MORE COMPASSION. AND WE CAN ALL USE MORE OF THAT.
2013 Toyota Scion FR-S
I was eagerly looking out for my chance to drive the new Toyota Scion FR-S model. Developed in collaboration with Subaru, the FR-S Scion model has been touted as a sportier alternative to previous generations of Toyota’s Scion brand. After first checking out its athletic and flashy exterior, I knew that I was in for a fun drive.
Wow Factor: In terms of overall performance the FR-S model is at the top of vehicles in its class. That along with its stylish exterior, affordable price and Toyota reliability all adds up to great wow factor.
Ride: Armed with a 2.0L 4 cylinder “boxer” engine, the FR-S delivers great power in handling most road conditions. It’s lightness and positive aerodynamic design further adds to this ride’s touted agility and precision on the road.
Comfort: The FR-S interior entirely compliments its streamlined exterior by putting emphasis on what’s fundamentally useful to the driver, rather than extraneous details that add little value to the overall driving experience. Starting with it bolstered sport seats that offered great lower back support, to its very agreeable instrument displays, the FR-S more than exceeded my expectations.
Spin Control: The Scion FR-S has a lot of factors working in its favor. Beginning with its high-performance, affordability (prices start at a little over $26k) and solid gas mileage (25 mpg city/34 mpg highway ), the FR-S is a ride that will more satisfy drivers seeking a vehicle in its class.
