‘X Factor’: L.A. Reid Defends Judges Britney Spears, Demi Lovato

by Cherie Saunders

The X Factor’s L.A. Reid (L) and singer Demi Lovato arrive at Fox’s Fall Eco-Casino Party at The Bookbindery on September 10, 2012 in Culver City

*”The X Factor” will return for its second season in the U.S. on Wednesday with Nicole Scherzinger and Paula Abdul gone, and Britney Spears and Demi Lovato joining returning judges L.A. Reid and Simon Cowell.

But not everyone in the blogosphere has been so sure that Britney, 30, and Demi, 20, have enough talent or experience to be judging anyone’s singing.

“The truth is that Demi is so close to the demographic that is currently the landscape for pop music,” argues Reid, currently the Chairman and CEO of Epic Records. “She’s the closest to it. So she has great taste, and she really leads us. And, of course, Britney is the pop princess and has been for quite some time. Our two ladies here, they keep Simon and me on point.”

“The X Factor’s” Simon Cowell and Britney Spears appear on Ellen (airdate, Sept. 11, 2012)

Cowell says the reason he brought the “X Factor” from the UK to the US is because he truly believes the next Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin or Mariah Carey resides somewhere in these 50 states. Below, Simon says he’s feeling pressure to make sure that “The X Factor” is the one  that will find that next great vocal powerhouse — and not “The Voice” or “American Idol.”

“The X Factor’s” two-hour season premiere airs Thursday, Sept. 12, at 8 p.m. Watch a promo below.

I am not so sure you will find it with those two that you have picked. Why do they talk about pop culture and not the REAL talent that it takes to be the next Whitney or Aretha. I am so sure that Brittney Spears or this other person would know real talent if it bit them in the butt they simply do not know how to really sing all these so called artist do these days is make songs with chants in them and all they do is repeat the same old lines over and over is that really singing???? (Taylor Swift) How about some real talent for a change Simon almost let Melody go last season and then reslized he made a mistake and she won it all L.A Reid really thought that Marcus person could sing he must have a tin ear for sure Gesh!!!! If you can really sing and have real talent you can usually tell it immediately it comes from the heart

    • Amen redbone!!!! Brittney is a total dingbat IMO and Demi is not far behind, based on the previews X-Factor looks like AI with the losuy talant and snarky remarks form the judges. Simon thoght this show would be a huge hit …. NOT!!! there are too many singing competitions shows out there and it is complete oversaturation.

I”m also tired of these reality talent competitions. It’s becoming an overdone concept. I think LA has to defend the show and its judges. To be honest, Whitney was not discovered on at show like this and anyone comparable won’t be either. These shows are more able ratings and money than finding talent. I’m over American Idol, but atleast with Mariah, there’s someone legitimate judging contestants. She could get on the stage and actually make it through the first round.

Britney judging a singing contest? She may have sold a lot of records and had popularity…but no one considers her to be a respectable “artist” in the industry. She’s judging a competition she could not compete in. If the show wanted legitimacy, they should have ask someone like Aretha to judge. Atleast when someone got upset about not having talent…they couldn’t challenge the judges and have a point.
