Milwaukee Boy, 5, Left on School Bus for Hours Until Family Found Him | Video

*The parents of a Milwaukee kindergartner are speaking out after the child was left behind on a school bus, and police were slow to aid in a search for the missing boy.

According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinal, 5-year-old Cameron Smith was left on a GO Riteway school bus Monday after he fell asleep. Chenequa Byers-Smith, the boy’s mother, said she initially called the school and bus company when her son wasn’t home by 5 p.m. but couldn’t reach anyone by phone.

She then contacted the police, who insisted on searching the family home to gather more information. That’s when family members decided to take control of the situation and launch their search for the boy.

While the police were at the house, Byers-Smith’s mother and two brothers traveled to the bus company and found the child still on the bus in the parking lot. Cameron was honking the horn for help when his family found him Monday evening.

“It could have ended very differently had we not thought to go up there,” Chenequa Byers-Smith said.

“He was very cold and tired,” Byers-Smith added. “He was finally relieved that somebody knew where he was.”

The mother took her son to Children’s Wisconsin to check if he was hypothermic or injured.

“He was OK, just really tired,” she said, noting that her son was left traumatized from the incident.

GO Riteway said the bus driver was terminated for violating safety protocols at the end of a shift.
