Cleveland Bus Driver Upper Cutting Female Passenger Goes Viral (Videos)

bus driver hits woman with uppercut*Over the weekend, folks all over the country were in an uproar over an incident on a local Cleveland bus that went haywire.

There was a 22- year career at stake, but once a female passenger became irate and began to hit and push the driver…well, of course, all hell broke loose!

The 25-year old female passenger, Shi’dea Lane, is shown on a now viral cell phone video from September 18, just a cussin’, pushin’, and maybe even spittin’ on a 59-year old male bus driver Artis Hughes, now known as “Smokin’ Joe Frasier.”

We gave him that moniker because of the vicious upper cut he delivered to Lane’s chin after she pushed him just a little too far.

  1. At first when I saw the video, I laughed because this girl kept at it and got physical with driver unproked. Alot of people sided with the bus driver and said he was right to punch her out. BUT, being the elder (though she was disrespectful and ignorant), he should’ve call the police once she started acting a fool. I was really surprised that he continued engaging in a war of words with this 25 year old female. Now he has been suspended and may lose his job. Working with the public on a daily basis is no joke, as I can attest to, but I’ll be damned if I let any badass kid make me lose my job. When she refused to pay at first, he should’ve have told her she would have to get off at the next stop so it would not have escalated as it did. If she refused, he could’ve call the police. I’m sure he tried to do the right thing by allowing her stay on but instead, it made things worst. Nowadays, it is federal offense to assault (well at least in NYS) a public service operator.

Also, why didn’t the person filming this mess call 911? Do folks actually find this mess ‘entertaining’? Ugh!

    • musbdherbs says:

Yes we do find it entertaining. That’s why the video has made the rounds since then because people want to see it. I’ve never in my life gone to any video on that site..until now.

What I’ve found ironic about the entire ordeal is that “men should NEVER hit a woman” logic was thrown out the door of a moving car. It only proves the position I’ve had all along.

Most people are full of crap wrt to stuff like this.

      • ‘Most people are full of crap wrt to stuff like this.’

Uh, exactly what are you referring to?

        • musbdherbs says:

Most people who argue there is never an acceptable instance for a man to hit a woman.

Many of the same ones who criticized Chris Brown to be exact.

          • Well, it isn’t BUT if a woman puts her hand on a man, then she has to accept the consequences. I understood why ole boy did the rope a dope on her but now he has to pay with his job. As a public service worker, you have to make some hard choices. It’s hard to be spat on and abused in such a manner and not retaliate. However, if there was a law in place, it would have protected him and she would have gone to jail for a federal offense. I really hope the man does not lose his job. It could happen to anybody.

  2. I gasped when I first saw this video her beating was brutal, I won’t get into the men shouldn’t hit a women thing I see it like this, don’t hit some one and NOT expect to get hit back just because of who you are. The bus driver did lose his cool and his anger got the best of him. And while it’s easy for me to say, but I would’ve of handled it differently. Twenty-two years on the job just up and went down the drain over some rude loud mouth passenger. And why did she get back on the bus after almost getting her head knocked off? Hopefully this lady learned a lesson behind all of this, not everyone is going to kiss her azz when she can’t have it her way.

    • There’s a better clip of it on another site and there, you can see that she got in his face first. Witnesses stated that she grabbed him by the throat and spat on him. That’s when he pulled over the bus and gave her a Fred G. Sanford special. Gotta hand it to ole girl she got right back up and tried to go back for more punishment. The scarier part is this chick has a 4 year old child and claims to be a ‘churchgoer’. Go figure!

  3. nightshift says:

Sorry, this shit is too funny and the driver should be commended . . . .that shot was solid . . and pull this boys-shouldn’t-hit-girls shit . . . . . . ‘ol boy had an Ike-Tuner flash-back and P-O-W!!! To-the-moon . . . . last but certainly not least, kudos to my girl, she’s got one helluva chin! too funny!!!

  4. musbdherbs says:

Hey NYC, you can’t have it both ways. Either it’s never ok for a man to put his hand on a woman. OR..there are instances where a man putting his hands on a woman are understood. As you can tell from the girl yelling, “she’s a FEMALE..she’s a FEMALE” some people encourage women to act out under the protection of the male moral code.

I would be surprised if he loses his job though. That’s only if they don’t consider the gender of his attacker.

    • There’s never a reason for a man to hit a woman, especially like that. He was not in physical danger and there were other avenues to have her removed. She was wrong all the way and I am a person who also says, a woman shouldn’t ever hit a man because of situations just like these.

A woman putting her hands on a man doesn’t justify this type of response but most definitely opens the door to it and she put her life and safety in danger over some 1.50 and her ego. She went there only because she assumed there weren’t physical consequences to her actions. Conversely, he could have levied consequences and avoided putting his career in jeopardy without uppercutting her.

This reflects badly on all of us, because this isn’t viewed as two people who tussled and you all know what I mean. This behavior is on every bus, every subway, every day.

      • musbdherbs says:

I won’t cosign that there’s never a reason for a man to hit a woman…even like that. I think most of us look at it from the “dominant” angle and while I do understand it, all men don’t universally act alike. That’s why I think it’s unhealthy to allow women to think they can go wild on a guy w/o any consequences, especially a stanger.

I believe that outsider will see “race” in this but only to the extent it highlights out of control black folk and the consequences of their action. I’ve sat on buses and wondered how the drivers maintain composure. Then again, I live in DC where kids throw large rocks at the windows of buses. Just because…

    • Musb, I stated the same in the prior post. I stated:

“Well, it isn’t BUT if a woman puts her hand on a man, then she has to accept the consequences.”

Because a man shouldn’t put his hands on a woman UNLESS it is a form of self-defense. That’s what I meant. I’m quite ambivalent with the man’s actions because it could’ve been averted by telling her to leave the bus early on instead of bantering back and forth with this young girl. When that wasn’t enough, she got more agressive by putting her hands on the man and spitting on him. At this point, she wanted to test him and he fell for it. But with folks walking around with weapons, he was lucky that she did not have a knife or a gun on her. The situation is bad both ways but he will be loser in the end. He let his emotions get the best of him and its rather unfortunate.

  5. MelodyCool says:

Good thing she wasn’t seriously hurt from the punch and tossing from the bus or the driver could have found himself behind bars. He should have made her leave at the next stop rather than prolonging the argument. Did anyone get the gist of why she didn’t want to pay her fare? Hope she learned her lesson…never place your hands on anyone and expect to go unchallenged.

    • She stated that she left her backpack. Then suddenly, she ‘found’ her fare. It is unclear what started it but according to witnesses, she was loud and obnoxious as soon as she got on the bus. A witness claimed that she was drunk but that hasn’t been confirmed. She was on the news after the incident and stated that, in so many words, her behavior was wrong. She was not expecting to be punched out like that but she does admit that she aggravated the situation by harassing the driver. If you saw the video and heard the audio, girlfriend’s mouth was really gutter and was itching for a fight. I really believe that the bus driver is ashamed of his actions as is the young lady. The fact that neither pressed charges on the other speaks volumes.

  6. Upon identifying the driver, he was immediately suspended and removed from duty. His behavior is absolutely unacceptable.

Not only should he not be allowed to drive a bus again, but he shouldn’t be allowed to even ride as a passenger. Two wrongs don’t make a right. She was obviously in the wrong, but as a professional who is trained to deal with the public, he should know better than to be arguing with her and even instigating her to spit on him.
He needs to be charged with assault and battery and then she needs to get a lawyer to take him to the cleaners.

    • “She was obviously in the wrong, but as a professional who is trained to deal with the public, he should know better than to be arguing with her and even instigating her to spit on him.”

Uh, say what?? How does one ‘instigate’ somebody else to spit on them? That’s plain despicable and low class. One has nothing to do with the other. I agree that he should’ve handled things better but her behavior was out of control. There is really no excuse for her acting like a sewer rat!

      • “How does one ‘instigate’ somebody else to spit on them?

He was clearly heard instigating her to spit on him numerous times along with the use of denigrating terminology while referring to her.

Her behavior was out of control?! :?

And what would you say of his? There are clear protocols for handling this type of situation and he was waaaaaay out of line.

        .

        • musbdherbs says:

NYCSOul, I’m going to tell you in advance that you won’t get anywhere w/REDS on this. He believes in the “she instigated me to rape her” theory..which explains his position here.

I’m pretty sure that REDS doesn’t know Clevlands protocol for responding to acts of violence.

          • Upon identifying the driver, he was immediately suspended and removed from duty. His behavior is absolutely unacceptable. RTA apologizes to our customers for this incident. A full investigation continues.

Seems like evidence that a whole lot of Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority protocols were broken.

    • versatile says:

“He needs to be charged with assault and battery and then she needs to get a lawyer to take him to the cleaners”

REALLY? Last time I checked, spitting on someone is an assault.

      • MelodyCool says:

So is pulling guns on your accountant…yet you called it ‘fake’ because candy azzed Gunplay was the culprit.

  7. Here is what I posted from the linked webpage:

“But instead, she is constantly badgering him and gets to the point where she threatens to spit on him. You can hear him daring her to spit on him.”

She is 25 years old, not 10. It was her choice to do it. He didn’t have control over her body. The man is trying to drive a bus with passengers and this female, who intially did not pay her fare, is acting a fool in front of the bus. She had no concern for the safety of her fellow passengers. Witnesses stated that she was cutting it up before she got on the bus. So, yes, her behavior was out of control!

If you read my posts before, I clearly stated that he did not handled the situation properly by continously engaging with this female. The man has been driving a bus for 22 years and obviously, he never received a complaint. He has already lost wages by being suspended. One offense should not destroy this man’s livelihood. Everybody always talk about how public servants are supposed to act but the public should also have some culpability as well. You don’t have a right to abuse and berate a public servant because you can’t do what you like. In NYC, she would have been charged. There have been many bus drivers in NY who have been physically assaulted, sometimes seriously by violent and unruly passengers. Sometimes, it has nothing to do with how a public servant ‘acts’, some people are just spoiling for a fight!

    • He didn’t have control over her body.

But he had control over his body and language.

The man has been driving a bus for 22 years and obviously, he never received a complaint.

That’s all the more reason why he should handle the situation differently.
Are you sure he has never had a complaint? Seems to me this guy’s been living on the edge for a while. Maybe the of being a driver is getting to him. Well, change job before you start taking it out on the passengers.

  8. All y’all that’s taking up for this mofo, imagine it was your sister. When you put your hands on someone like that, it’s a whole ‘nother matter.

Remember the Tyler Perry movie “The family that Preys?”
Remember how much Sanaa Lathan character did her husband wrong and how her brother and mom was upset with her? But as soon as he clocked her, both her mom and brother was about to whip that as.

    • Uh, sorry Reds…if MY sister had acted in the dispicable way that chick acted, my own DADDY would have said she got what she deserved. This isn’t just a regular incident in which a male and female have an altercation. This was a bus driver who was responsible for keeping the passengers on that bus safe, and this lunatic is in his face when he clearly tells her to stay behind the yellow line, and then she pushes him and spits on him while he is DRIVING?? I’m sorry…I don’t feel a bit sorry for her. Of course the bus driver should have pulled over and called the police, but suspension is a fair punishment…not termination. She did assault him FIRST…it wasn’t like he just got wary of her foul-mouthed ass running her mouth…

      • This was a bus driver who was responsible for keeping the passengers on that bus safe.”

Right. That’s why he is told not to instigate any violence.

        • How did HE instigate violence?? You keep saying that…did you watch the video?? SHE was the instigator, not him. He told her to step behind the yellow line and she kept running her mouth instead of sitting her stupid ass down. What right did SHE have to harrass the bus driver? She got on the bus without paying, and then gets mad when he insists that she pay her fare? Is that the instigation you’re talking about? Did that constitute her getting in his face while he was driving, and then pushing him and spitting in his face?? You can’t be serious…

          • ”How did HE instigate violence??”

He repeatedly dared her to spit on him, just to give him an excuse to violently assault her.

” He told her to step behind the yellow line and she kept running her mouth instead of sitting her stupid ass down. “

There are protocols for handling that type of situation, but he decided to take the matter into his own hands, against company policy, just to show is ass.

  9. I was watching Judge Judy, the other day about this very topic… This woman was suing this man because he’s bust her lip, gave her and black eye, and a swollen face, they’ve were at a night club she’s got in this man face hit him, through her drink in his face.. Judge Judy, told the woman she’s feel it wrong for a man too hit a woman, but she’s told the woman she had no right to put her hands on him, and just because he’s got the best of her, she started it, now wants to sue for pain & lost wages…. The Judge dismiss her case.

    • There is a thing called proportional response. The assaulter of the woman at the night club should consider himself lucky that the judge did not choose to follow the letter of the law.

  10. He SHOULD HAVE HIT HER HARDER! Then her head would have came off. FATALITY!
