*Former senator George McGovern died Sunday morning at age 90, according to a family spokesman.
In the presidential election of 1972, he lost in a landslide to Richard Nixon. He was ridiculed for his anti–Vietnam War stand and caricatured as the candidate of “amnesty, abortion, and acid.” However, McGovern went on to be revered as the conscience of the Democratic Party.
