*Bus drivers have a difficult job, dealing with bad attitudes, mischievous teens, and traffic. And that’s on a good day.
Well, one Cleveland bus driver, Artis Hughes, couldn’t handle the pressure anymore, and took it out on one unlucky female passenger.

As we reported, the incident took place on Sept. 18 when 25-year-old passenger, Shidea Lane was caught on camera yelling at the bus driver, Artis Hughes. She said every curse word in the book before appearing to assault the driver.
That’s when Artis stood his ground, and landed a boxer perfect upper cut to the chin.

Artis was of course taken off his job, but not fired just yet. Lane neither denied nor confirmed if she actually hit Artis, but did say that, as a female, she’s in shock for being hit that hard.
Who wouldn’t be?
Before you take the side of the woman, think about his position… at least that what some folks are saying.
A petition was started to get Artis back on the job because his supporters believe he rightfully defended himself.
According to www.syracuse.com, the petition reads:
“If men refuse to strike back, fearing that the law will favor their female abusers over them, we create an environment in which women can harass and victimize men with impunity.” The petition continues, “Instead, a man’s decision to fight back against a woman should be respected…the bus driver was the real victim and was justified in hitting back.”
So far, the petition has 1,000 signatures. Via Facebook, it’s gotten 14,000 likes.
Equal work for equal pay.
Hitting a woman is NEVER justified and he should have handled it better but he did knock the holy shit out of her…bet she’ll think twice before she puts her hands on someone else and maybe this was a long time coming…she’s probably more embarrassed than anything and I know that jaw was sore…LOL
So how far should a man let a woman go before he strikes her?
Stephanie, you obviously have never seen “Pimps Up, Ho’s Down” where self-proclaimed “Bishop” Don “Magic” Juan actually gives situations where, yes, a man is not only justified but must hit a woman.

Moms didn’t even hit her, she was just talking crazy too her..

Look here – in New York there all kinds of reports where passengers not only physically assaulted bus drivers – some have been stabbed, spit on, kicked and have had human urine tossed in their face. Oh hell naw… Ain’t no freaking way as long as I got breath in my body will I ever tolerate that from another human; by any means necessary will I to protect myself – if that means fighting, scratching, cutting, punching, grabbing a baseball ball – you name it. It gets REAL when you decide to assault someone. As for this silly sister, I can’t begin to muster up any sympathy for her because she was so foul; here antics were uncalled for and way over the top! Here’s some advice for those aggressive sisters like the women in the video… If you don’t want to get hit by a man, like a man – then don’t hit one. It’s really that simple.
I’m riding with the bus driver. Don’t go looking for a fight, if you don’t want one. Male or female, you can’t expect that everyone will rollover from your bullshit. One day you’ll get the fuk knocked out ya like ol’ girl. To assume that a man will allow a woman to attack him without defending himself is ludicrous! If women have the balls to attack a man, they should be prepared to catch a fist by that man.

Hey I’m not mad at the Brotha at all. I would have lost it and went for the gutso on this hoodrat heifer. I would have mop her on every seat I’m that bus. For anyone to attack you and then put their DNA (which is the most disgusting human action you could do), you would lose it too. She was in the wrong and I have no empathy whatsoever for this mental chick. She is trying to get a check which most likely she will. She shouldn’t have gotten on that bus if she knew she couldn’t pay for her fare. She is a silly typical hoodrat that when the tables turns the opposite she wants to be the victim. Not! Ms. Lane just got schooled and she will sit her loud mouth down somewhere next time. As for the bus driver, I hope he can keep his job. I remember riding on public transportation as a student and I have seen countless incidents of unnecessary attacks towards the bus driver. SMH!

The person who started this petition completely missed the point.
This is not about a man’s right to respond to his female “harasser.” This is whether or not transit workers should respond to unruly passengers in a manner that will only escalate an already tense situation. This mans behavior was unprofessional, disrespectful and ultimately dangerous. He didn’t even know if the woman had a weapon. What if she opened up on him and endanger the lives of other passengers? That is why there are protocols for dealing with this type of situation. Why didn’t he follow them?
This man cannot be allowed to serve in a capacity where he has to interact with the public. That’s what the petition should be making sure of.
Let anyone, male or female, hit and/or spit on you, and then see how YOU react in that split second situation. It’s so easy to Monday morning QB when you’re not in the thick of it. I was raised to respect women, and I will continue to do so, but ladies gotta remember respect goes both ways, so with that being said, GTHFOH with that BS.
I’m pretty sure if I’m out on the streets and someone spit on me I would react in a somewhat violent manner. But everyone seem to be missing the point why this man was fired. First, he’s on the job representing the company, and he is told what not to do in that situation. But what makes it worse, and probably why he lost his job more than any other reason, is that he actually instigated her to commit the act. His job is to calmly say to the woman to pay or get off the bus, and if she refuses, he can refuse to move the bus or call for the authorities to deal with her. If despite his restraint, she still proceed to assault him, then he has a right to defend himself. But no, he had to dare her, and in the process, helped her creating a dangerous situation for himself and the passengers. What if she was packing? He is just as irresponsible as her, and two wrongs don’t make a right.

No matter how much you and anyone else rail, and sign petitions, this man’s actions was wrong. What you and all his followers can’t get, is why he was removed from duty.
If she came in there and started assaulting and spiting on him, he probably would still be working even if he had knocked her out cold. All he had to do was stick to protocols. Wait for the police to come, but in the interim, do not escalate the situation.
Although it is not clear from the video, she probably had made contact with him, thus justify a proportional physical response (though, not getting up and clocking her).
Where he screwed up was when he decided to show his ass by repeatedly referring to her in a derogatory manner and repeatedly daring her to spit on him. if you can’t see that his behavior went over the line, then thankfully, you are not the one making decisions in the public interest.
I haven’t ridden a bus in years but I always thought that a bus driver had the right to throw a person off the bus in a situation like this? If that’s right then he should have done so. I don’t think he should be fired the woman crossed the line by striking him but he should be disciplined. Pherhaps this will teach her that you can’t just him a man becuase you THINK he won’t strike back!!
I stated it the other day, depending on the consequences, if a woman hits a man unprokoved and he strikes her back, then she has no recourse. In this case, this young lady was wrong to hit the driver while the bus was in motion. Not only was she spoiling for a fight, but she put the lives of other passengers in jeopardy with her actions. However…
I think the bus driver used poor judgment, not to mentioned he keep engaging with this 25 year old ‘child’ for 7 long minutes prior to the knockout. The bus driver is 59 years old so the onus is on him to act accordingly as a man and a public servant. He should’ve pulled over at the next stop and told her to get off. If she didn’t, then he should’ve called the police. That’s what he should’ve done. Now, I don’t think he should lose his job but I have a feeling that he will. As Mr. Apologetic stated above, it is a felony to hit a public service operator in NY. Bus drivers here endure all kinds of abuse similar or worse than the cleveland bus driver. However, they do not retaliate because they can lose their jobs. They simply pull over the bus and radio the police for help. This driver should have done the same thing and it would not have escalated the way it did.
Neither one of them are pressing charges against the other so I think they both realize that not only do they look ‘foolish’, they were both in the wrong. Too bad the bus driver may lose his job and pension because of it.
He did call the police. That’s already been covered. That hadn’t gotten there in time.
But I will disagree w//you that he should’ve acted like a “man.” He did act like a man. A man who had been spit on and slapped. Had the 59yr old man TKO’d a 25yr old man. His “manhood” wouldn’t be called into question.
The only reason she had the gall to attack him was because he was a man and thought he wouldn’t knock her ass out. She said as much in her silly interview.
Obviously, I missed the part about the police being called. But again, that was probably way after the fact.
The point is he really should not have kept arguing with the girl, when clearly she was simply trying to agitate him. The fact is that he allowed that fool to go down to her level. Regardless, his manhood has and will continue to come into question, rightly or wrongly, because he allowed this sewer rat to get the best of him.
He has the right to defend himself since did hit him while the bus was in motion but he did stop the bus to slug to her. Now, if the bus wasn’t moving and she attacked him, then it’s a different story. As I stated before, as a public servant, people seem to think that they have a right to abuse and berate us but we have to adhere to whatever conduct or standards that are placed on us. If her injuries were more serious, he could’ve been sued in civil court by her. I’m just saying. Being physically assaulted by a complete stranger is frightening but unfortunately, public servants are bound to conduct themselves in way that does not put the public in harm’s way. While I am not supporting her badass behavior, I would be damned if I would allow a punk like her to make me get suspended or lose my job.
My mother raised me not to hit anyone if I didn’t want to get hit, male, female or whatever. I’ll paraphrase Chris Rock: He shouldn’t have hit her, but I understand.
I do NOT, repeat NOT, condone violence of any kind. With that being said, HE SHOULD HAVE BEAT THE BITCH SENSELESS. THEN, she wouldn’t have been able to RISE TO THE OCCASION and spit on him.

SMH, I guess nobody knows what kind of crap Nurses put up with in the hospital. They sometimes get spit on, sneezed on, coughed on or cursed at. Some have even been raped by patients. There are also patients who purposely try to get the ones helping them sick. Then there are the racist ones who would hang you from a tree if they weren’t so ill that they could not get out of their beds. They tolerate the egos of doctors whom tend to think they are Gods, take care of patients all day, and deal with difficult family members who give the doctors all the glory.
My point is that they put up with as much sh*t as city workers and it is still not okay to retaliate against the person regardless of how stupid and ignorant they might be.

Most people on this site know better, but because they can remain anonymous, they will talk all that bullshit in support of this man’s vicious actions. I bet if it was a white bus driver dong that shit, they would show better judgment. We are talking about a bus driver, not some random person where the code of the streets will dictate his behavior. I don’t see how they could possibly let him go back to driving buses after this. The only reason why he’s not gone as yet is because they have to follow the process of a routine investigation. He’s no better than her. He just kept going back and forth with her, going down to her level using all type of derogatory terms. Even if he didn’t assault her in such a violent manner, they had more than enough grounds to get rid of him. Nowadays, with all the videotaping that’s going on, businesses are conscious of how their employees represent them to the public.
It just shows how sick society is for so many people to support the actions of this monster for hitting a woman like that, when he was the one who instigated her to make the incidental contact. The law does not allow him to respond with that level of violence, so I still want to know what’s the excuse for not charging him with assault and battery.
