*The nightmare for that Cleveland RTA bus driver is far from over.
Artis Hughes, the man who upper cutted an irate female passenger a while ago, was fired from his job.
Besides the fact that any woman who reads the news will probably never get with him, he’s now jobless. Double whammy.
RTA issued a statement following the company’s course of action, explaining that Artis’ actions were inexcusable and doesn’t follow with the company’s conflict policies.
“Mr. Hughes claims that his actions were in self-defense. The evidence does not support that claim,” the statement read. “We expect our employees to diffuse any potential situation. We do not believe that Mr. Hughes took the proper steps to diffuse this situation. The proper procedure would have been to pull over and stop the bus, then call Transit Police for assistance.”
However, the employee manual says that in extreme cases such as self defense is it reasonable to use force.
The video of the incident shows Artis reacting to the passenger after the woman spit on him. When reports first surfaced, there was question whether or not she landed the first blow.

Self-defense? Is this guy serious? My only question on this incident is why there was even a question and why it took so long to fire this guy. There was NO justification for his upper-cutting this girl. Disturbing that so many ran to his defense too. Maybe they saw a different video than I did.
I told yall! I’m not surprised that he was fired. He is a public service worker and he has to uphold whatever rules and procedures while doing his duties for the public. Everybody ‘snaps’ but he did not help the situation when he continued going back and forth with this lady. He simply should have pulled over the bus at the next stop, ordered her off and if she refused, call the police. He allowed a 25 year old punkette to get the best of him. The worst of it is that he was only 3 more years until retirement. What a shame.
I recall years ago in NY that the driver would pull over and wait for the police or MTA to arrive to take care of the situation. Forget the other paying passengers! That was the rule.
I have to admit that I have mixed opinions about his being fired. I think he should have been suspended without pay for a period of time, and forced to undergo anger management.
NY is a litigious town. If this happened in NY I am willing to bet that the driver would sue the transit… and likely win! Similar to the employee in McDonalds that beat the H*ll out of the two women. He beat them with a stick for swinging on him.
Lady_Elle, they still do that. The bus drivers here are smarter in not engaging with fighting with customers. The main reason is that some of them have been spit on or worse, stabbed and killed by violent people. It is no joke! All public service workers are told to they have to conduct themselves in the utmost professional manner, even when confronted with a belligerent customer. Especially, since some customers carry weapons. I think when all options are exhausted, self-defense is the last resort.
Apparently, the transit authority did a thorough investigation and probably found out that things didn’t exactly go down the way the driver described it. And mainly, they just don’t want to be sued by the punkette. The driver can sue if he wants but that doesn’t mean he will win his case.
The Mickey Dees situation is a little different because those ‘women’ jumped over the counter with the intent of harming a worker just doing his job. He did not swing, spit or cursed at the two women. All he did was try to verify their $50 bill and they went beserk! That was totally unprovoked and frankly, it was self defense. The charges ended up being dropped for the guy but he ended losing his job, too.
NYCsoul what rationale did Mickey Dees give for firing the guy? Some of these companies are insane. There was a case, I believe it was McDonalds also, where an employee fled the scene during a robbery but was fired from leaving her position.

Really sorry to hear the Mickey Dees guy lost his job. He may have sued… for a settlement. He was attacked on the job. They should have had security! That should be enough for some $$$ until you his next gig.

We saw what the person taking the video wanted us to see but there are stories coming out where the bus driver asked her to calm down and later told her if she didn’t she would have to exit the bus. If she spat on me, she would have had to get off the bus to pick her head up off the ground. It is not only nasty, what she did was stank, and since she had been drinking I bet that was some foul smelling mess on that man. She stopped being a lady when she began to show her ass and spatting on someone is considered assault, so the man has a suit and recourse against his company. I think it is unfortunate that he was fired. A 3 month suspension should have sufficed. Yes, he could have handled things much better and yes there are rules. However, we are all human and have to allow room for mistakes espeically under certain circumstances. What really annoyed me is that she was on some news show playing the victim. It shouldn’t have gone that far, but she spat on the man! That is one of the most insulting things you can do to anyone. It carries across cultures. The sad part is that she will likely be rewarded for her bad behavior through a lawsuit.
