D.L. Hughley Explains His Disdain for (Black) Women

*Ever since comedian/political commentator D.L. Hughley put his foot in his mouth regarding black women during the Don Imus “nappy headed hoes” incident back in 2007, he’s had an image problem.

That image problem precisely is that most folks think he doesn’t like black women. Well, they’re right. But he claims it’s bigger than that. He doesn’t like women in general.

This coming from a man who’s been married for 26-years and has two daughters.

In his latest book, “I Want You to Shut the F*** Up: How the Audacity of Dopes is Ruining America”, the misunderstood Hughley breaks down his disdain for women.

In Chapter 17, Hughley admitted that he doesn’t like women including his daughters.

During an interview on NPR’s “Tell Me More” with Michel Martin, the funny man explained his reasons why.

————————————–

MARTIN: You don’t like women?

HUGHLEY: I don’t like the way they process – no, I don’t. I enjoy their company. I do not like the way that they reason. You can’t understand them.

MARTIN: Well, for a man who has been married for 26 years and has two daughters – you have three children overall, two daughters and a son – you don’t think you’ve figured it out?

HUGHLEY: Do you think any man has figured it out? Anyone? Anyone? Name me a man who says I’ve figured women out, I got it.
My daughters, who I love immensely, are so certain, like if a man can have a face only a mother can love, then women can have personalities only fathers can love.

MARTIN: OK. That’s fine. But I have to ask you, though, and throughout the book, though, you do make some impassioned discussions about just how cheap you feel black life is viewed in this country.

HUGHLEY: It is viewed.

MARTIN: OK. But then to go on and in many parts of the book have some very harsh things to say about black women – African-American women.

HUGHLEY: Like what do you think is harsh?

MARTIN: I have to ask, you don’t think that’s a contradiction? Well, this argument that you’re saying that….

HUGHLEY: I don’t – I think my life has been a contradiction.

MARTIN: …black women is – the only black woman you could be married to is your wife.

HUGHLEY: Yes.

MARTIN: Beacause…black women are so messed up? I mean what – or because she’s so great?

HUGHLEY: Well, in her ability to kind of tolerate my – it’s her ability to tolerate me, A) and B) I’ve never met an angrier group of people. Like black women are angry just in general. Angry all the time. My assessment, out of, just in my judgment, you either are in charge or they’re in charge, so there’s no kind of day that you get to rest(ph).

MARTIN: I have to ask whether is it because black women are an easy target?

HUGHLEY: No.

MARTIN: And so you can say these things because nobody is going to…

HUGHLEY: Do you think black women are an easy target?

MARTIN: Well, I mean I’m thinking you or – one of the ways you came to public attention is your defense of Don Imus for calling the Rutgers women’s basketball team nappy headed ho’s…

HUGHLEY: Right.

MARTIN: …and I understand that your defense was free speech, which I think many people understand. But if you think he’d said that about another group of women, that that would’ve been considered funny?

HUGHLEY: I can’t, really, that’s like, I can’t disprove or prove a negative, but I can say this: that I have defended any number, I have defended Michael Richards for the N-word. I’ve defended Tracy Morgan for his comments. I defended Rush Limbaugh. You know, to me, you know, what people are talking about has never really kind of worked its way into my mindset. It is the idea that they have the right to say it. So I think that’s really kind of an unfair – optically, that looks different than the way I see things. But…

MARTIN: OK.

HUGHLEY: …I don’t think black women are easy targets at all. I respect them great – a great deal. I think that to pretend like I don’t see things the way that I do is to do a disservice to them.

  1. SPEECHLESS

  2. I would have to agree…am I am a Black women…I don’t know what Sally Sue and Becky drink or take everyday but I wish I could be as happy all the time as they seem to be.

    • @Ima Reale

YT women are happy all the time because the world is their oyster, they are regarded as the salt of the earth, the epitome of beauty and virtue, if we were looked upon that way, we would be happy all the time as well. IJS…I happen to of course think differently, the first woman (Eve) was a woman of color, black women carry the load of the world on our shoulders, we have unbelievable strength, and courage and we too are the symbols of beauty, but since this is the yt man’s world, well you get the drift…

  3. Always consider the source when general assessments are made like this about black women. I will bet that if you give the “source” a psych evaluation, all kinds of dysfunctional ISH would be revealed. A strong man who is solid in thier securities and esteem and have a good sense of self would appreciate “their” black woman and would shake their MF head at fools like “Fugly” Whatever personal experience he has had with the black women in his circle does not equate to world knowledge and generalites of them all. I will agree that some of us can be a bit “too much” lol, but it is only because they (and me sometimes) have not learned to balance the strength that is necessary for black women to deal in this world, with humility, it should be equal parts, or in some cases more of the latter. But you don’t have to sacrifice strength to satisfy some weak MF who instead of relating to the black women, chose hating on them. In which case, WE don’t want your fake ass anyway, so let Becky have ya!

    • Couldn’t agree more. Also remember, that this clown is a half-baked comedian in search of an audience. Any publicity he gets is good publicity, but I have to say these foolish statements he makes are unnerving!

  4. Deuteronomy818 says:

The question is.. why do black women appear to have such disdain for black men as well?

  5. This interview was so disjointed and difficult to follow. I guess I need to hop over to NPR to read the full interview transcript so I can see everything in its proper context.

  6. nightshift says:

I don’t know what to say . . . . is his mother a black woman or was he created in a dish? . . damn!

  7. Wait. Don Imus made the nappy head comment in 97? It couldn’t have been that long ago.
I was still a teen at that time. I remember it being much later than that.

  8. sista’s, dont pay this idiot d.l. one ounce of your attention. you can tell by this interview that this high school drop-out azz is as dumb as a box of rocks. white people love him because he is stupid enough to say the things that they wish they could say about blacks in general and black women in particular. he thrives on attempting to be some kinda of polarizing comedian but he fails miserably. he an ignorant man who happens to have the power of the microphone and believes his own hype. once he became apart of the “kings of comedy” tour and it got great appreciation from the masses he started to smell his own shyt. and thats all that it is, shyt.
you can tell he is dumb because he talks off of the top of his head, incomplete sentences when he speaks, nonsensical foolishness and a bunch of ignorant statements is all that he brings to the table. he constantly refers to being a high-school drop out and i think thats where the plethora of his insecurities begin.
succinctly put, the guys a dope.
if white women are the so-called salt of the earth, then black women are the sugar.

    • CrystalFabulosity says:

      Love it.

    • I didn’t know he was this insecure. Can you imagine Monique or another black female celeb/comedian making these types of comments about black men. There is nothing funny about them. Instead they sound very hateful and he felt the need to spew them out. Not sure why. Can you imagine Moniqe saying black men are so shiftless. All that they do is lie, have adulterous affairs & create babies that they don’t take care of. What is the point to make that type of polarizing statement on a public forum and come off as if everyone of a certain group is that way. This guy has some real issues & sounds like he’s on the verge of a breakdown.

  9. ignorance is when stupidity and hubris collide.

  10. Do we really need to hear about another “sell-out” “white clown” in black-face’s dislike for Black Women.
We see it everytime we step outside or turn on the TV

Black Women have been dealing with this every since we go off the boat…Starting with the name calling…from Pick-a-Ninnies, to Yo-mama-so-black” jokes, colorism, from hoochies to hoodrats, chicken heads, skeezers, nappy head hoes, to bitches and hoes, etc..

CAN WE STOP GIVING THESE DYSFUNCTIONAL WHITEWASHED IDIOTS A FORUM.

This is one of the reasons why SOME black women have attitudes.. We live in a very hostile environment…Created by our men…
While …white men have given white women the world…

Also, Women really dont need men figuring us out…they would just use it to try to play us… So keep them guessing ladies.

And if Down Low Hughley has such a disdain for women period… (dont like women’s company.. dont like to be around them)… he should join the other team…. with a quickness.

  11. Hughley I use to like you, but now I can not stand you, your comment is file and you came from a black woman bobo you do not look like you came from no white woman, aand what can you tell your daugther’s I dislike black women it something wrong with you , IF i was a wife to you you could never get my cookies NEVER. MR Ged.

  12. DL Hughley is just one of many insecure bitter brothra who has hopped on the bandwagon of the “angry black women” bull sh..! He has disdain for the black women, yet he admitted to defending Rush Limbaugh of all flippin’ people…. he’s an a-whole. Maybe DL is putting his black wife on notice, I guess he’s at that level now and it’s time for him to jump ship, y’all know it’s coming.

“if white women are the so-called salt of the earth, then black women are the sugar”……thank you huey love ya! :)

  13. Had I not considered the source I may have reacted differently. As it is this nappy headed fool walking around looking like rats been sucking in his head tore his ass with me a long time ago. That he used to play off his audience and insult them for humor was bad enough, then he comes out and tries to support and justify Imus’ remarks, and now this? F’in blatherskitte!

  14. faithful31us says:

You cannot experience a few black women and they are the representatives for the rest. I believe DL Hughley have some issues within himself he has been married to the same woman for 26yrs and have 2 daughters, that is disturbing to me to know that he feel that way about black women. If you look at American history in relation to blacks, society has taught blacks not to trust each other. And some of us don’t even realize it. They throw these statistics out here and we believe it, why because in our circle it looks that way. Distrust for black women and black men started during slavery time. In order for a race of people to have been en-slaved for as long as our ancestors were they had to build a wedge between the two. Out of all the race of people black men and black women is the only group that put so many negatives about each other in the atmosphere (music, videos, books, words, movies etc.) We need to come together as a group of people and try to fix this.
    .

  15. DL Hughley is an ass with a whole lot of issues. His statements and the entire topic are bull.

Please Black Ladies, do not support this person in any way.

  16. Lady_Elle says:

The Disdain that he feels against “Black” women would also include ALL of his female family members!

If EVERYTIME D.L. Hughley sees them they are angry… perhaps he plays a role in their anger! Perhaps ALL “Black” women have the same response to his antics!

  17. Well I will never support him as a comedian. I am a black woman and I am not angry. I can never understand how black men can attatch such negative stereotypes to black women. Based on statistics black men are the most incarcerated, are least likely to have a college education, among other things. Even with statistics to back up the negative things associated with black men, black women still do not publicly talk down upon them. Our black female comedians, athletes, and actresses never speak ill of black men. So why do black men choose to tear down and publicly assasinate the character of black women? SMH DL Hughley I will never buy another tape or cd or ticket. Sell your tickets to the “Tea Party” or Rush Limbough let them support you and your racist ideas. Many times people of a race feel as if the comments come from a member of the race that its ok and not racist. I dont feel that way. Dont tell me how I am without getting to know me.

  18. DL…put some of that energy into going back to school. You speak as someone who is uneducated because you are uneducated. It shows. And it’s sad. Be like Drake, my brother. And then, follow in the footsteps of Vince Carter. High school and then a little university…it’s never too late to re-educate…it’s a message we tirelessly tell our beautiful, brilliant babies, so try being a model that these children can emulate. It sure beats sending a young, Black girl (your daughter????) to her bedroom to cry herself to sleep because D.L. is hyping the hype of the stereotypical characterizations of Black women….D.L., my poor little dumb, uneducated, comedy-is-all-I-can-do ball of confusion, you are not supposed to support the hype; you are a product of hard-working, committed, brave, and oh yes, very angry Black women who were determined to leave a legacy of hope, vision and as you can attest to, accomplishment for those that followed. You can’t have it both ways, brother ….if you are going to reap the benefits, then re-whipping (some of) those who paved the path for you to get there is just plain wrong…and well, a little scary. But I digress…for the truth is, I am curious…since you gave no context for your statement (and again, brother – SCHOOL, and for the hell of it, pick a course with a Black female prof)…who exactly are you speaking about? Just Black American women – oops, sorry, ALL Black American women? Am I included as a Black Canadian woman ? (I hate being left out)…are you including Black women who live in Africa, England, Moscow, Finland, Paris…? Black women who work in the community campaigning to eradicate AIDS, cancer, poverty, homelessness? …are you including the Black women who trudge to school meetings, and city council gatherings to denounce the belittling, the rampant and racist under-education of Black boys; the Black women who march and fight against racial profiling and over zealous bullets that are killing our black babies? Are they included or do they get a pass? You really are no different than those confused, sometimes self-hating black babies who are out there shooting each other. So, may I say to any young, beautiful Black girl who is reading this post. SIDE STEP DL’S BULLETS…. YOU ARE MARVELOUS, YOU ARE AMAZING…IT IS YOUR DESTINY TO CREATE AND TO FOLLOW IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF THOSE BLACK WOMEN WHO MADE SURE THERE WAS A PATH FOR YOU TO FOLLOW. AND SOMETIMES TO MAKE THAT PATH HAPPEN…THEY HAD TO GET A LITTLE ANGRY. EMBRACE IT, MY CUTIES.
D.L…. Go get some education, and in that journey perhaps you will find a little context, brother….The fact is a lot of women – from all backgrounds – are angry…there is a lot to be angry about, and there still will be as your daughters mature and grow into women – who will more likely than not find themselves immersed in ‘isms’ that make them crazy and yes, damn angry. How sad it is that they won’t be able to talk it over with their self-hating dad.

And I know I’ve said it twice, but three times may be the charm…D.L. brother- education is your friend…it’s also what all those angry Black women fought for…ok, I’m done….and you, D.L. ARE weakest link…

  19. nylaconnect says:

As a Black man, sisters please accept my apologies for Dumb(ass) Loudmouth Ugly(man) and other sad brothers like him ,as NY Radio legend Gary Byrd recorded back in the 70′s Every Brother Aint a Brother (youtube that song and The Crown,a collaboration w/Stevie Wonder)).

As the old classic James Brown joint said DL is talking loud and SAYING NOTHING!!!

  20. As they say, all my skin folk ain’t my kin folk. D.L. Hughley is a very ignorant, bitter Brotha who will throw Black Women under the bus just to get some attention. He believes his own hype and think his psuedo intellect will open people’s eyes up and get himself another corny gig. He is not even a funny dude. If it wasn’t for the Kings Comedy Tour, he would not have even been thought of. Nobody is checking for this negro. He smelled his own sh*t too far long and it will be just a matter of time when he falls in it and stay stuck.

  21. Taurusingr says:

So…there’s absolutely “no truth” to ANY thang he said!!?? Rrrrrrrrrriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight! SMH!

    • blacksallysue says:

its a generality and an unfair one. It’s not that there aren’t angry people or angry women in the world but to publicy make isolated insults at an entire group of people simply because of a god given trait (especially when you are the father of 2) is sick. It’s super Unkle Rukkus like. IF you dont get that keep smacking your head.

  22. Truth_Translator says:

Taurusingr, I think Neicy (the 3rd from top comment) is acknowledging that there is ‘truth’ to what he said? They’re giving an excuse/reason, but they’re not denying it. I haven’t read the rest of the article so I don’t know if Hughley ever explains why he feels this way or why he thinks what he thinks of the black woman, but anyone who would deny that there’s any truth to his end statement, is clearly in denial. Just look at the “general/average” comments/responses from black women here; rather than acknowledge that the man is entitled to his opinion (whether it’s right or wrong/true or false) they are dogging him. Black men have been telling black women this for years, why they (in general) choose other races of women over them. They know black men (in general) feel this way about them, they’re just mad because Hughley is not calling it “strength” as they would like him to. But the truth is that It takes strength to STFU, and black women (on average/in general) have little to no experience in doing that. It takes strength to take responsibility for your thoughts and emotions, and they (on average/in general) have little to no experience in doing that. They think they’re excused from having to control their thoughts and emotions; they think because they were dealt a sorry hand/given the short end of the stick in society (slavery, nappy headed, etc) that that gives them the right to be angry, or rather, excuses them from being truly happy, grateful, joyous, etc.But the Bible says “rejoice, and again I say,,,,” Think about it, the funniest part of Steve Harvey’s comedy stand up “Don’t Trip – He ain’t Through With me Yet” was when he was talking about the “angry” black woman in the mall beating her son, the “angry” black women walking her son to school with the housecoat missing the button, and the “angry” black usher in church who’s feet was hurting. So you see, the black man (in general) has great reason to feel this way, especially one who’s had the opportunity to see/experience other races of women. Until that time, they thought all women were like that, but the “Becky’s”,”Asian Persuasions”, etc., showed them not so. But enough with all that, that nail is hit on the head. I think what’s ironic about this article is that Hughley (and Chris Rock) have always come off to me as extremely “angry” about the whole black and white thing in they’re comedy. I’ve heard Hughley’s latest work is about him trying to get black men on the endangered species list. So that tells you what he thinks of blacks. Dinosaurs and Woolly Mammoths are on that list to name a few, “animals” that are extinct.

  23. D.L. Hughley is a weak and silly man.

He’s a self hating Negro who made a name for himself by defending racist elderly shock jock Don Imus when that cretin insulted Black women on national radio.

That’s why White media gave this buffoon a career.

He doesn’t like Black women because he doesn’t like himself – he’s stupid, an Uncle Tom and probably a closet gay man (what do you think the “D.L.” stands for?)

He is weak and pathetic – that’s why White media likes him, because Caucasian males are only comfortable with Black men they can look down on as an inferior.

  24. Huey that was eloquently put. I love it!!!

  25. timmdogg_00 says:

I cannot believe a sub-par comedian like him would make such a ludicrous remark. It’s brothers like him and that fool JJ Walker that really amazes me? Did they both forget they are black and that someone in there respective families had to endure such horrendous atrocities for them to have the things they have today! What a disservice to their ancestors and current parents! Get a little money and the first fools want to do is denounce their race. No matter how rich – powerful one becomes you are still considered low to YT (NO T ALL, BUT TO SOME!) With all of the so-called wealth this fool has amassed, I bet he can’t catch a cab in New York city….ask Danny Glover!

  26. foxxynana56r says:

I am a angry BLACK WOMEN and I am proud to call myself that! D.L. Hugley is entitled to is opinion and to express how he feels even if it sounds a little disjointed. In reading the article he is not saying that he agrees with Rush Limbaugh, Don Imus, and Tracy Morgan, etc. he agrees with their right to free speech which I also agree with. This man is not worth all the derogatory comments made towards him as a person. Why can’t we have an open dialogue without denigrating each other, our race, or our gender. All races are angry about something that they feel undermined their race, period. What upsets me the most is the fighting among our race; men against women, women against men, light skin against dark skin, urban living against suburban living, educated against uneducated, and the list can go on and on. The question I ask is when will it end, when will we be proud of all our blackness and stop jumping on the bandwagon of black bashing???? I am a proud black women who raised two strong black children who are not hating on their own race they embrace who they are and whom they belong to Jesus Christ! I raised them to get along with all races and to stand up for who they are without feeling less than. If we want a strong black nation we need to stop tearing each other down!!!

  27. melodycool says:

DL has ‘dirty eyes’ and I’d hate to cross paths with him. So glad the word is out about him and he knows it.
