*Lenny Kravitz is set to portray music icon Marvin Gaye in director Julien Temple’s upcoming biopic about the late artist.
This will be Kravitz’s first leading role after having appeared in several other features, including “The Hunger Games” and “Precious.”
The Evening Standard is reporting that Lenny will relive the last few years of Gaye’s life in the film, covering his alcohol addiction and tax evasion while he lived in London in the early 1980s.
Marvin battled against his drug dependency after moving to Ostend, Belgium, but was shot by his own father shortly afterwards in Los Angeles in March 1984 after they argued about misplaced business documents.
Janis Gaye, the singer’s second and last wife, is said to be ”very skeptical” about how the project will turn out.
Julien Temple is best known for helming the Sex Pistols mockumentary “The Great Rock ‘n’ Roll Swindle.”
Ehhhh. Can’t see Lenny as Marvin. What happen to the project with Jesse Martin? Did that get shelved? I don’t see the all the hoopla about Kravitz plus his singing is ok. I can understand Jan’s skepticism and I don’t blame her. I also don’t get why all these black bios always use the last years of a person’s life as a basis for the movie. Elvis, Marilyn, and other white celebrities do not get this treatment and if they do, its because there have been more than one movie/drama made about them. It’s the same nonsense they are pulling with the Nina Simone project.Wouldn’t even get into the casting of Zoe Saldana. But anyway….
From my recollection and several Marvin books that I own, Marvin had a cocaine problem, not alcohol. When he fled to Europe to avoid the tax evasion charge, his drug problem worsen when he was in London. It was only after one of his swedish fans rescued him and took him to live with them in Belgium or Sweden. I can already forsee that there will be ‘liberties’ taken with this movie. SMH.

I can’t see Lenny Kravis playing “Marvin Gaye.” Jesse Martin look just like Marvin. Plus the brother can act. I think the “Jesse Martin” project got shelved. The Nina Simone movie I will not support at all.

Lenny Kravitz is a good artist in his own rights. However, he should never been cast to play a musical legend like Marvin Gaye. I think they should have put this production to the side until
a more suitable actor that at least resemble and can sing or carry a note close to Marvin Gaye.
My goodness next Hollywood will cast Justin Bieber to play a young Michael Jackson.
