obama fiscal cliff speech *Today, President Barack Obama invited congressional leaders to the White House next week.

The invite is to begin talks to avoid the so-called fiscal cliff, but said any compromise would have to include higher taxes levied on wealthier Americans.

The president, speaking before a group of middle class Americans in the White House East Room, said he wasn’t wedded to every detail of the plans he outlined during the election, adding, “I’m open to compromise.” But he offered no indication that he was willing to back down on his insistence that the wealthy pay more.

Earlier, House Speaker John Boehner had said he hoped “productive conversations” would begin soon but underscored that Republicans won’t agree to higher income-tax rates.
