Will and Jada Raising Their Kids with the Freedom to Express Themselves

*Jada Pinkett Smith must have heard the whispers about her kids. Don’t act like you don’t think the same things – why is her not-even-a-teen-daughter shaving her hair? What’s up with the gay pride messages? Is that a piercing? Yeah, everyone is guilty.

The actress, mother and wife chatted with People magazine about her controversial parenting style.

“I think that old-school style of ‘I’m your parent and I’m greater than you’ doesn’t work,” she recently told People magazine. “What I establish with my children is a partnership,” says Jada, whose two younger kids are in show business. Her stepson, Trey, hasn’t expressed any Hollywood aspirations yet.

The Smith children have been intentional about expressing themselves and establishing their own identity in the industry; with their flamboyant styles, loud colors, wild haircuts and message laden music.

But that’s the way Will and Jada raise the kids – with the freedom to express.

When “instilling in [Willow] the power for individuality, we communicate with our kids in a way that our message overpowers any other message that they get out there,” she says.

  1. They have the right to be kids and not grown, they are kids freedom of speak to express I Iam fromdo not know about that that might just get out of hand. as long as they know I am the Parent and they are the child Do not get it twisted. Iam from the old school. God said train a child in the way they shall go.

  2. That’s great until they are sixteen and decide to express themselves by drinking or staying out all night. There are plenty examples of parents who talk about how they had such a great friendship with their kids until the hormones kick-in. The teen years are a whole different ballgame.

    Smile Jaden and Willow!!!! lol!

  4. I concur with both.. Sfloyd i’am from old school too, & DOne is right wait until they b come teenage and start smelling themselves as my parents would say ( old school ) talk…. Look what happen to Whitney H. daughter Bobbi K. Her mom was taking her to club with her while she was a teenage, letting her drink wine now look at her she smoking, drinking, cussing, shacking, and God, only know what else. I have a good relationship with my daughter I was her MOTHER… Not her BBF not her party friend that’s doesn’t work look at Linsey Lohan and her mom…

  5. Growing up, freedom of speech was NOT an option in our house. You did what the hell you were told and you damn sure didn’t leave the house being a disgrace and God forbid you clowned away from home, an ass beating was waiting and THEN if you dare threatened to call child protective services or 911, they’d hear the ass beating and wouldn’t dare send nobody to the house to save you…OMG I’m sure most of us can attest to being whupped with a switch…I remember one time I let my younger brother convince me to sneak off and watch this Woody Woodpecker cartoon at Shakey’s Pizza AFTER our grandmother told us not to go…man, when I peaked out the booth and saw the look on her face, I knew we were DEAD. She grabbed me on one side and my brother the other and pinched the FOCK out of us…OMG…then she had the nerve to tell, you better not cry. To this day every time I think about that pinch, I have to rub my arm…we laugh about it now with our Grandmother and ALWAYS tell her that was borderline abuse and her response is, well, you guys should have listened…to this day, I hate Woody Woodpecker cartoons!!!

    • Whipped with a switch? Da fuck? Are you from the country or some shit? LMFAO! I’ve never in life been whipped with a switch. Now that I think about it, I don’t think I’ve ever seen one. LOL

Freedom to express themselves is catch-all for: I done lost control of these damn kids!! I don’t want to be friends with my girls. And why does that boy always have that stupid expression on his face, he ain’t cute but, I guess it’s a tween-thing . . . . . . . . . Now see? I wasn’t going to say nothing but, you force my hand, TesticAl, you know you’s a damn lie !!!!!!, . . . . .but I have something better, I never got spanked and was spoiled as a rotten egg . . .I whipped my kids and they’re all the better for it.

        • nightshift, I’m lying? WRONG! I’m not from an area where “switches” are prevalent. You forgot, I’m from LA. Switches aren’t prevalent where I’m from. I’m an ’80s baby. I got whipped with a belt, not with a switch. So again, how am I a lie? *sits down and waits*

          • TesticAl, it is more generational than geographical. I’m from L.A., a child of the 60s and got my legs switched. My mom used to make me pick the switch off the tree and it bet not had been a thin switch, lol. When I became a parent I didn’t use a switch on my children.

LoL, my older sibs got the belt, yard-stick, wooden spoons!! aaaahhh, the good old days. : )

My kids do have to the right to express themselves, but its done in a respectful manner and dialogue. I was allowed that, but knew not to lose my damn mind. Taking your teenager to clubs and letting them drink is not freedom of expression, its lack of parenting. I think Will and Jada at times do not see where that line is crossed. Letting kids pick out clothes fine, head shaving….maybe not so much. There should be a middle ground. Either extreme creates problems. I had friends who had friends for parents and they were messed up people as a result. I also had friends from the overly controlling homes and when they left at 18….lost their minds.

  7. Let kids enjoy their childhood and youth…case and point the Jackson family. I’m thankful to God my kids had good Christmas’, good birthdays and were allowed to be kids and not just trying to put them out there to make me a quick buck. My youngest daughter is an accomplished Ballerina and was recruited by several dance troupes but there was no way she would be on the road at 13, 14, 15 with a tutor. I wanted her to experience her Prom, high school football games and enjoy her youth…its sad…Jada needs her ass kicked for the daughter…you talk about a dyke in training…
