Whoa, that’s a relief.
Maurice White, who suffers from Parkinson’s Disease, is still here.
Seemingly out of nowhere reports on social media began circulating this morning that the 71-year-old founder of Earth Wind & Fire had died today.
Even Wikipedia reported his passing, but fortunately they got it wrong. (See screenshot below.)
UPDATE … Wikipedia has since removed their obituary notation about White.
Interestingly social media is also the place where the rumor was debunked by Earth Wind & Fire. Below is the message they posted on their Facebook page.
Maurice White is alive and doing well! The rumors across the web are false. Please spread the word.
And before the organization posted their notice, music journalist Scott Galloway spoke to a family member and also confirmed that White was alive:
From A. Scott Galloway -
MAURICE WHITE IS NOT DEAD!!!
SERIOUSLY, PEOPLE NEED TO QUIT JUMPING TO CONCLUSIONS AND TAKING TWITTER POSTS AS FACTUAL NEWS!! GET A GRIP AND TAKE A MINUTE TO CONFIRM THINGS BEFORE YOU POST. I’VE SPOKEN TO A FAMILY MEMBER AND IT IS NOT TRUE. PUT A SOCK IN THAT BULLSH*T!!
Maurice White was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in the late 1980s, which led him to stop touring with Earth, Wind & Fire in 1994. However, he retains executive control of the band.
Props to Jawn Murry (www.AlwaysAlist.com) for hipping us to the news and helping confirm that White is still alive.
