Spike Lee Says ‘Django Unchained’ is ‘Disrespectful to My Ancestors’

*Jamie Foxx and his crew of “Django Unchained” cohorts have been pumping up the volume on the new flick everywhere.

He’s also been getting a lot of flack for the production. It should come as no surprise that one notable person in particular, Spike Lee, is refusing to see it because he says it’s disrespectful.

However, not too long ago, the filmmaker appeared to give Foxx blessing regarding the film.

‘‘I’m not going to say anything bad about this film. It looks like y’all are getting it,” is what Jamie said Spike told him, when they talked about the film, reports Shadow & Act.

It really is unclear about what Spike was saying in the moment, but let’s fast forward to a recent interview with Vibe.

“I cant speak on it ’cause I’m not gonna see it… All I’m going to say is that it’s disrespectful to my ancestors. That’s just me… I’m not speaking on behalf of anybody else.”

There’s always two sides of a coin right?

Will you see it?

jeepers spike im sorry, guess quentin and jamie didn’t realize that you are the only person with african ancestors . . . . . . sometimes, I wonder if he has early-on-set-alzheimers . . .. .never much liked him.

I am DRAGGING my 19-year-old to see this movie tomorrow. She has stated she doesn’t want to see it because she does not like the director. HUH?! I can’t STAND it when people dislike something, YET they do not want to read the book they dislike or see the movie they dislike. It’s SO ignorant ….

    • Your post is everywhere and is hard to decipher. So your daughter doesn’t want to see a particular movie because she doesn’t like the actor? Ok. A lot of people are like that. Then you go on to say you stand it when people dislike something. Aren’t you disliking the fact that your daughter is disliking something? Everyone is not going to like everything/everyone. The world would be like robots if it did.

Also, why the hell are you going to the theatre on Christmas? You don’t have shit else to do? It’s not the movie is playing that day only. SMH

I’m not getting on your case, but damn. LOL

@ TA thanks for the good laugh!!!

      • Grace12_34 says:

I’m glad to see you believe you’re a comedian. (You know what they say about those who laugh at their own “comedy.”)

You must have hit the egg nog too hard today. My post isn’t very difficult to “decipher” at all. I SAID my daughter said she does not like the DIRECTOR. I did NOT say ANYthing about an actor. She does not KNOW the director not to “like” him and has NOT seen any of his other work. The point I am making is not really a puzzle. A person cannot legitimately dislike something without having experienced it. Spike most likely read the script or had a private viewing of the movie, for all we know.

I do not celebrate Christmas, so going to the movies was not that big of a deal for me today. MANY, MANY PEOPLE went to the movies today. As a matter of fact, the show time I had originally meant to attend was SOLD OUT. I had to go to a different theater, and as I was leaving, I noticed that the next showing of the movie was SOLD OUT

The NEXT time you decide to “get on my case” or whatever it was you thought you were doing here, take the time to consider what I have said BEFORE you rant.

        • Grace, I think I’m a comedian? Point out where I said that/think that. I’ll wait. I just stated I’m glad she got a laugh out of what I said. Oh yeah, tell me what they say about people who laugh about their own comedy. I want to know. You think comedians don’t laugh at their own jokes? OK.

Back to the lecture at hand. I STAND CORRECTED AND I WAS WRONG on saying your daughter didn’t like the actor. See? I can admit fault. Now, what you were saying was a puzzle. You stated you cannot stand it when people dislike something. DID YOU NOT SAY THAT? Answer that question. With that said, YOU SAID YOUR DAUGHTER DOESN’T LIKE THE DIRECTOR. You cannot stand that correct? Are we clear? Yes we are. Now with all of that said you are DISLIKING the fact the your daughter DISLIKES the director. YOU SAID ALL OF THAT. Like I stated earlier. Your post is everywhere and hard to decipher.

Now, the next time you reply you THINK ABOUT A RE-READ EVERYTHING YOU SAID BEFORE YOU PRESS POST COMMENT. No hard feelings on my end and you have a good day.

Egg nog is nasty to me.

          • Yo T, what it do, mayn!? Yo it’s apparent we don’t see “eye to eye” ‘on dis one heeah?, but for the statement….”Egg nog is tasty to me” alonnnnne, nigarrrrrr?, “I” got the next round”!! Lmao! Ps….”Merry Christmas, damit”! (no homo, said like E.Murphy’s “Gumby”!) SLMAO!

  3. timmdogg_00 says:

I will be the first to go and see this compelling movie. I truly feel sorry for Spike as this brother is always negative about someone else’s accomplishment,s but his own. I am sure Quentin don’t give a rat’s azz if Spike doesn’t support his film. I want to see this film because: we as black people should never forget the struggles, the plight of our ancestors and the slim accomplishments we have garned this few years – not much, but we have overcome a few things. I think a lot of blacks, whites and other ethnics groups should take their kids and love ones to see this film. I can’t understand the hoopla surrounding the the use of “N” word when you have rappers using it daily in songs, social media outlets and journalists trying to convey his or her comments! The world isn’t a perfect place, and it’s time for the rest of the world to see it’s ugly face/tactics and move forward. In order to move – we must make efforts to view things of the past to rectify the mistakes! Nuff said!

    • Grace12_34 says:

I saw this movie today, Timmdogg, and I can understand why Spike would not like it. It is pure TRASH, plain and simple. There is NOTHING “compelling” about it. The movie will do a brisk business at the box office because America loves ANYthing bloody and violent and white folk will FLOCK to hear the “N” word used with such frequency and in such a COMEDIC setting.

Samuel L. is a brilliant actor and plays as much of an Uncle Tom in the movie as he does in real life. HOWEVER, if there is an Oscar nod of ANY kind for this movie, it will be for Leonardo DiCaprio. He was AMAZING and evoked the emotion required for the Oscar nod.

As far as the “N” word is concerned, IMO, it is now a lost cause. By the end of the movie, I was sorry I had not kept track of how many times it was uttered. It seemed to me that the “N” word was used every every 3 seconds. That word is forever SEARED into the American language and psyche now (IMHO, moreso than ever).

BTW, Kerry Washington seemed to hate having to kiss Jamie Foxx, and I can’t say that I blame her.

      • Grace so you were mad & wanted to force your daughter to see this movie and you didnt even like it smh and also you say your daughter is 19 so that means she’s an adult & should be able to decide what movies she does & doesnt wanna see without her mommy dragging her to see it. Let her have a mind and opinion of her own. She doesnt have to like the director if she doesnt want to & she doesnt have to explain to you why. That is just ridiculous! You’re probably one if those overbearing mothers who refuse to let their kids grow up. Go get a hobby or something.

  4. F’N CRY BABY

  5. and Heeeeeeeeeeeeere we go!! Here we have Spike Lee whining like an infant talking about Django is disrespectful to his ancestors. Spike don’t hate on Mr. Tarantino. Every director has a way with making movies. You yourself should know that. So you haven’t had a hit since “Do the Right Thing” but hey that doesn’t mean that your films after that was trash. I actually like the majority of your movies. However, my advice to you is “do the right thing” and if you have nothing positive to say about the film, just simply say 2 simple words “NO COMMENT”

    • Dafuq? How is Spike “Whining and hating”? Do you know what those two terms mean? Spike said NOTHING DISRESPECTFUL NOR DID HE SAY ANYTHING NEGATIVE ABOUT THE FILM. Should anyone be hating it damn sure is you. You had to be joking saying Spike hasn’t had a hit since Do The Right Thing. You’re mad. Please tell us why. Also, tell us/me where Spike was hating and saying negative things on the movie. I’ll wait.

  6. It is a known fact Spike has had his issues with Quentin in the past, and it was over the “N” word, but this movie being set in the time of slavery and the south-to make the film realistic, the “N” word would be used, but then again, I heard that it (“N”) may have been used way too much in the movie-coming from movie reveiwers.

  7. So confused. Rappers use the word everyday. This is a non issue as far as I am concerned.

    • What the fuck does that have to do with anything. Rappers use it. So what? Everyone doesn’t listen to rap. I fail to see why you mentioned rappers in the first place.

  8. “American Slavery Was Not A Sergio Leone Spaghetti Western. It Was A Holocaust. My Ancestors Are Slaves.Stolen From Africa. I Will Honor Them,” Lee tweeted.

OK, Spike. We get the whole Holocaust part of slavery, but this movie is a western which dealt with aspects of slavery. Are you saying that every movie spanning that era has to be a full blown thesis on slavery? And do you hold all westerns which acknowledged the institution of slavery to that standard? At least this western acknowledged the existence of slavery, unlike so many others which gave the impression that blacks and slavery were not even a part of that era.

I haven’t seen the movie, but which aspect of it does Spike considers disrespectful?
    Use of the N word?

Sorry to break it to you Spike, but in those days, N was universally used by whites when referring to blacks.

  9. Let’s be honest, Spike Lee doesn’t seem to like any movie that he didn’t make. How can he dislike something and comment on it if he hasn’t even seen it? That’s completely asinine. By the way, who in the hell made Spike Lee the authority on all movies starring Black people? To me, Spike is just another person with another opinion. His opinion means absolutely nothing to me.

  10. He’s mad because a white guy made this film. And he’s ignorant because he hasn’t even seen the film. What a turdbrain.

  11. Grace12_34 says:

One last thing about this garbage movie …

There was a historical inaccuracy. The setting for the movie is two years prior to the U.S. Civil War (1859). In the movie, about 30 men in Mississippi put white “bags” on their heads a la KKK. THIS did NOT occur until the END of the Civil War (1865) in Pulaski Tennessee where the KKK was founded. It began as entertainment for bored young white Confederate veterans. When they saw the reaction of the superstitious blacks, they donned the white “bags” and white sheets on a regular basis and road through town terrorizing the blacks.

  12. Taurusingr says:

Spike?, is a bitter ass haterrrrrrrrrrr, is all! As one the pioneers of the game, he should & DOES know GD well that his “beef” shouuuuuuuld be with H-Town, & not the players within it!! Now I DO agree that it’s fkd UP that “We” can nevva be allowed to tell Our OWN stories/history etc….! But again…”that” ain’t QT’s', J Fx’s, SJ’s OR KW’s fault, that’s H-Town’s racism at work!! So..WTF hate ‘on them?, c/z his ass is “jelly” & a fkn coward, who would rather address the easy targets, rather than have a real “GOOD” fight with the reeeeeeal guilty party. And with “theeeeeeeze” Black’s involved?, we know it haaaaaaaas tah be a more accurate than “not” depiction of the/Our history in this film!
Thus…..”hate’en” being THE only thang about Spike’s “tenderness” . Same with most Obie haters. They TOO would rather go after him, than the “system” they (“deep down”) know MAKES him do what isn’t the most “popular moves”. But…..I digress, & in BOTH cases I say…”haters?, get ooooooovva it, it’s wrap! Peeeeeeeeace! Ps….& Spike even toooooooold JFx (to his face!!) he “WOULDN’T” “go ape shyt/criticize” this film! Fkn liiiiiiiiar, TOO! SMGDH!

  13. Taurusingr says:

Again I say….”you lyyyyyyyyyyin lil “cricket” youuuuuuu!!

  14. Yo Spike!?…this is a Western film with slavery “IN IT”!, not “Roots pt. 5″!! So….what’s reeeeeally goin ‘on, mayn!?? SSMGDH! (Ps….yah “cricket”!!)

  15. So…:”some”/others” don’t care for the movie, walked away saying a “Black” actor was and IS a “Tom”!, & then chooses one of the “White” actors Oscar worthy!!, & diiiiiiid dat shyt ‘on a “Black website!!?? Nope, not “self serving blindness/bias” at allllllllll. FOH! I mean the entitlement and BOLDness of dat shyt! Some mofos are reeeeeeally “feelin themselves”, ain’t dey!?? MUST have “kin” in H-Town. Ragga fragga “saltin”, shishka , fragga dagga shagga etc…..! I yie yiiiiiiiiiiiiie! Ehh?…..fk’em! Aaaaaaaaand sceeeeeeeene.

  16. Grace12_34 says:

This could be a FUSCHIA web site for all the fuck I care.

I am NOTHING if not BOLD, in a country where I am free to express MY OPINION. GTFOOH. AFTER HAVING SEEN THE MOVIE, MY Oscar goes to Leonardo DiCaprio. I never said he was a better actor than Samuel L. Jackson, I said he gave an Oscar-winning performance.

Samuel L. was brilliant in his role, but his character did not evoke any emotion from me. He was just another Uncle Tom NEGRO. Leonardo DiCaprio’s character made FEAR ooze all over the chair I was sitting in. I was AFRAID of what he was about to do. I didn’t give a damn what Stephen (Samuel L.) was going to do, EVEN when it was clear that he was going to tell Candie that Broomhilda and Django knew each other and might be married.

Otherwise, this movie, IMHO, was a piece of trash. I was shocked to see that there is actually a DJANGO COMIC BOOK. I’ll bet white folks’ ancestors are PROUD that their descendants figured out a way to make money off the backs of the people they ran into the ground.

    • Taurusingr says:

STFU wouuuuuld you juuuuuuuuust!?? GD! Ain’t nobawdy tryin tah here yo “America freedom song”. STFU! And?……STFU sum moe! That?, is all. (Curtain closes and @ the last minute, I lick my tongue out at …..”the racist in the spotlight”! Wah wah wah waaaaaah! Shyt git tiiiiiiindah, huh BECKy!? Hee hee heeeeeeee! (“MJ” style, y’all!)

    • Taurusingr says:

Yeah…..STFU?, & go “fiiiiigure out” how to respond to “T A”, witcha “AWOL ass”, “that’s whaddup! I know I know….”too much time ‘on yah hands &…cain’t count”. Fkn saaaaaad. Ehh well….”Happy New Year”. (And I sworrrrrre I wouldn’t have a battle of wits, with an “UNarmed person” again, GDmit!!!!! Where’s my draaaaaaank!!??, sippy sippy.)

      • GOT DAMN! Taurus went in. LMFAO @ “witcha AWOL ass”! You’re a damn fool for that man I swear. LOL at all of the shut the fuck ups. This place is a mad house. haha

        • Taurusingr says:

You diiiiiiiiiig? Yo… there’s “princiPALIties” in this thang, maaaaaayn!! LMBAO! Chick is missin huh fkn “meds” in this B, tadeh…WTF!? Shyt is KRA!! (Sliding the “Jack Danny” bottle down!) SMH!/Lmao!
