mlk's i have a dream (by tayo fatunla)*In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the upcoming King holiday, we’re proud to bring you illustrator Tayo Fatunla‘s tribute to Dr. King and indirectly, President Obama. Appropriately it’s called “I Have A Dream.” We asked Tayo to describe his vision for this piece.

Last year, I had the opportunity to be in same Newcastle University – King’s Hall in the United Kingdom – where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was honoured some 45 years ago with a doctorate degree. I also watched video footage of him accepting his doctorate degree in which I was introduced for the first time to another powerful speech of his. Not only is President Obama  the first Black president of the United States he has proved himself as a President by winning a second term and not because of his colour. As an African cartoonist, I derive much inspiration for dreams coming true. MLK DREAMED THE DREAM, OBAMA LIVES THE DREAM and in over four years time would have been considered to have LIVED THE DREAM on behalf of generations to come. Putting pen to paper I felt that 50 years this year of the great speech of MLK through this cartoon should be a beffiting tribute to MLK and Obama. It so happens that this month of January, the 21st, is MLK’s public holiday, the same month and day President Obama will be inaugurated as  for his second term.

By the way, through out the month of February, Black History Month, we will again feature the art work/illustrations of Mr. Tayo Fatunla.
