“Yes, Dr. King Had A Dream; But, I Too Have A Dream!”
*Lake Charles, LA – The 29th Annual MLK Coalition Memorial Breakfast and Family Day Festival once again promises to be wonderful family fun filled event honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King. The 2013 theme is: “Yes, Dr. King Had A Dream; I Too Have A Dream!” the theme embraces the vision of inclusion and the possibilities set before us. The Commemoration begins with the Memorial Breakfast for 7:30AM at Trinity Baptist Church, 1800 Country Club Road, Lake Charles, LA under the stewardship of Senior Pastor, Steve James hosting as the Keynote Speaker.
Students of the 5 (five) parish area are encouraged to participate with the opportunity to win the grand prize of $500 in each division. Reading of their essay aloud during the Memorial Breakfast and the above mentioned theme must be referenced. The essay must be Post- marked by Friday, January 4, 2013. Instructions and release forms were made available to all schools and are also available to be picked up at the business office of KZWA FM 104.9.
The MLK Unsung Hero Award is given to those persons in our community who has remained under the radar, yet given an enormous quantity of service, heart, and dedication to an effort. The award nomination will be selected by you, our community. Submissions should be made by Friday, January 4, 2013 by way of delivery of a 100 word essay delivered into the business office, email, or faxed.
The Breakfast beginning at 7:30AM will give platform to the delicious taste of culinary expertise of the Trinity Baptist Church community. The Memorial will be televised on the local NBC affiliate KPLC TV starting for 9:00AM. The event will play host to Senior Pastor Steve James, with the inclusion of 6 (six) High School Choirs: Barbe (Lead Choir), DeRidder, LaGrange, St. Louis, Sulphur, and Washington Marion, all accompanied by the Trinity Baptist Church Orchestra. First place winners of the essay contest will be read by the winning student in each level, presentation of the MLK Unsung Hero Award, along with presentations to recognizable and notable figures within community are all highlights of the morning’s affair.
The stage play, “You Can’t Make Him Love You”, presented by United Front Entertainment on Saturday, January 19, 2013, with two feature times of 3 PM & 7 PM at the Central Arts and Humanities School. It proves to be a remarkable evening of entertainment and social relaxation. Tickets can be purchased at the Lake Charles Civic Center Box Office for $15 Pre-Sale and $20 at the door.
On Sunday, January 20, 2013, the Annual Gospel Extravaganza will be hosted again at Throne of Grace Fellowship, 2401 6th Street, Lake Charles, La for 6:00 PM and FREE of any admittance fee. It will be sure to give opportunity to choirs from Houston, TX to New Orleans, La and all sites in-between to showcase their talents while filling the audience with the anointing of the Spirit.
The festivity of Monday, January 21, 2013 begins with the Annual Parade rolling through the streets of our historic city with the line up for 8:30AM. Representation of all jazz bands, drum lines, organizations, dance academies, civic clubs, marching bands, drill teams, church affiliations, businesses, social clubs, schools ATV’s, golf carts, motorcycle clubs, trailride clubs etc. are invited to partake in the fun filled family affair. Registration is required of all participants, forms, fee, and or route inquires can be directed to the business office. The in-door Celebrity Gumbo Cook-Off is certain to attract all with the possibility of the $1,000 grand prize and the entitlement of bragging rights for the entire 2013. The Business Expo Booths will be set to sell the scrumptious taste of our Southern Hospitalities all warmed over in one room. Vast varieties of clothing, music, non-profit organizations, local business, and many other inanities are sure to provide interest to the shoppers, persons interested in upcoming events, or just the browser looking to past a good time. The finale of the day is the performing artists of near and far, Zydeco and Blues, and Swing out and Southern Soul all bringing their best sounds to intrigue the crowds.
