*With “42” looking down on all competition at the box office this week, its breakout star Chadwick Boseman is looking forward to joining another sports-themed pic…this time, taking place on the gridiron.
The actor is reportedly in talks for “Draft Day,” an NFL-set project from director Ivan Reitman. Kevin Costner stars as the general manager of a pro team who is forced to make difficult professional and personal decisions during the 24-hour frenzy of the NFL Draft.
Boseman will play a linebacker from Louisiana whose future rides on Draft Day – a somewhat familiar theme for the Brooklyn native, who just starred as another athletic phenom whose future depended on his delicate entry in 1947 into the all-white Major Leagues.
“He was a fighter,” Boseman said of Jackie Robinson, his role in “42.” “It was necessary to have somebody that had that fighting spirit in order to endure what he would have to go through. There’s a duality in saying, ‘I’m not fighting back.’ There’s an internal struggle.”
For Boseman however, there was an external struggle he had to deal with as well on “42” – one that left him physically bruised long after production on the film ended.
