You can also give Don ” Only in America” King that moniker too (except he’s in the boxing business). Although you may not have not heard a lot from him lately, he’s been very busy promoting fights here in America and over seas in Russia.
I happened to be in Las Vegas over the April 12-14 (2013) weekend where he had an event at the Treasure Island Hotel and Resort that featured a couple of his rising stars.
He’s got a young kid out of Albany, New York named Amir “Young Master” Iman who went against a more experienced Jeremy “Hollywood” Bryan in a eight rounder. And he’s also got a kid who was an undefeated lightweight named Angelo ” La Cobra” Santana who went against a tough guy out of Uzbekistan, who now lives in Houston by the name of Bahodir “Baha” Mamadjonov in the main event.
Say what you want about Don, he still can promote a show like no other. Whether it’s a large or small venue, his events have that flare about them that no one can match. And even though a lot of his marque fighters have gone to what they think is greener pastures, he still has a lot going on especially with his DONKINGTV.COM.
Now getting back to the event in Las Vegas, where we saw his undefeated lightweight prospect, Amir “Young Master” Iman improve his record to 9-0 with a devastating second round knockout over Jeremy Bryan who drops to 17-2. This kid Iman definitely has promise, and we are looking forward to seeing more of him.
And in the main attraction we saw Angleo Santana go against a pretty tough Bahodir Mamadjonov who got knocked down in the third, and came back in the fourth and nailed Santana with some solid shots to the head to make this bout even at that point. It was in the sixth that we saw Santana get back into the fight, but it was in the eighth that we saw him get dropped with a solid shot to the body by Mamadjonov. And it was in the ninth round that referee Kenny Bayless called a halt to the bout as Santana got dropped again with a barrage of devastating shots thus declaring Mamadjonov the winner by TKO.
Santana was quoted as saying afterwards, ” we were in a good fight and it should not have been stopped, and I would like to have a rematch” Mamadjonov on the other hand said,”I want to thank Allah, my coach, and Don King”. He went on to say, ” although he hurt me at times, I hurt him more”
This turned out to be an exciting card folks, and we’ve got more to come from Don King as Guillermo Jones is set to go against Denis Lebedev on May 17 at Crocus City Hall in Moscow, Russia in an event that will be telecast live on Showtime Championship boxing.
Also lest I forget, coming up in two weeks on April 27 at the Citizens Bank Arena in Ontario, Calif.,one of Don King’s heavyweights Bermane Stivern (who by the way was sitting ringside last Friday nite) is set to go against Chris “The Nightmare” Arreola in a title elimination bout that will be telecast live on HBO Championship Boxing.
In other boxing news, Nonito Donaire went against a tough cookie in Guillermo Rigondeaux in what turned out to possibly be the upset of the year in this WBO super bantamweight championship bout.
This was largely a one sided affair as Rigondeaux out boxed, and out classed Donaire through most of this twelve rounder with the exception of being dropped in the tenth by a left hook. This game Cuban American displayed superb boxing ability and remained undefeated as all three judges at ringside scored the bout a unanimous decision at the end of the day, and he improved his record to 12-0. There’s certainly more greener pastures ahead for this kid.
Coming up next weekend in San Antonio, Texas is the much anticipated match between Canelo Alvarez vs Austin Trout in a jr. middleweight title unification showdown. This should be very interesting as Alvarez seeks to revenge the lost that his brother took at the hands of Trout. As I always say, “we’ll see what happens”. This will be a Showtime Championship Boxing telecast and a lot of ringside observers can’t wait to see the end result of this one.
And don’t forget the exciting matchup with Danny Garcia going against Zab Judah on April 27. This one will be a dandy when these two jr. welterweights come together in this title bout that will be telecast live from the Barclays Arena in Brooklyn, New york on Showtime Championship Boxing.
And we’re all looking forward to seeing Floyd ” Money” Mayweather’s return to the ring as he goes against Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero on May 4 This bout will be brought to you by Golden Boy Promotions in association with The Money Team Promotions, and will be telecast live on Showtime pay per view. That’s all for now, get your popcorn ready.
