Ja Rule*Jeffrey Atkins, a/k/a Ja Rule has done his time and now he’s a free man. Well, almost.

According to TMZ the rapper was released earlier today after serving sentences for attempted illegal gun possession and tax evasion.

A source says Ja Rule’s wife picked him up from the Ray Brook Federal Prison in New York around 10am this morning. They proceeded directly home where Ja Rule will remain on home confinement until July 28.

In 2010 Ja Rule was sentenced to 2 years in prison after he plead guilty to attempted criminal possession of a weapon. In 2011 the rapper also sentenced to 28 months behind bars for tax evasion, after failing to pay taxes on more than $3 million in earnings from 2004-2006. Ja Rule served the tax evasion sentence concurrently with his gun possession sentence.

As we previously reported, he was originally set for release in July … but obviously he’s out early.
