*How do you celebrate your birthday?
If you’re Maya Azucena, you call some old friends and decide to introduce New York City to its newest live music venue, SubCulture.
Nesteled in The Village, SubCulture is the perfect place to play host to Azucena’s first concert since returning home from touring through Europe and Africa and she is definitely preparing to set it off properly. In addition to playing a full concert, replete with the live instrumentation, she’ll be performing material from her forthcoming album Cry Love.
“There’s something about the changing of the seasons that really puts me in a good mood, possibly because I know my birthday is coming, but there’s an excitement that comes over me”, Maya told me when starting to describe what this show means to her. Never one to waste energy, she’s focused on putting on a great show for those who come to join in the celebration and to do so, she’s pooled together a collection of diverse talent to satisfy the palate of those in attendance. Joining her on stage at SubCulture include HBO’s DEF Poetry Jam’s Vanessa Hidary, magical wordsmith Caits Meissner, world‐traveled phenom iLLSpokinn, teen sensation Isaac “Azar” Russell, playwright Kamaria, and libation legend Manchild Black.
Ms. Azucena is doubling her pleasure on this Friday night, playing two shows; the first set will begin promptly at 7:00pm, followed by the late-night 10:30pm show that may carry on to the wee small hours of the night. After all, it is a party! There are a limited number of tickets remaining for $20 and they can be purchased here. Join Maya Azucena and a few of her closest friends as she celebrates her birthday and SubCulture celebrates its debut of fusion of artistry, appreciation and attitude in New York’s West Village.
