*Spike Lee gushed over Mike Tyson Thursday as the pair promoted their upcoming HBO film of the former boxer’s Broadway show “Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth.”
“Before the next question I would like to say that Mike Tyson is the most honest human being I’ve ever met in my life,” Spike began. “Most human beings are not going to display the dark parts of themselves, the demons they have, to the world. That’s just not human instinct. And when you see this, and if the people saw the play, he’s out there on this stage naked, sharing his experience, his ups and downs, to the audience. And it’s traumatic. And to do that without thinking whether people are going to love me or like me or hate me, he doesn’t care about. He says, ‘I’m going to tell you the truth. This is my life, and do with it what you will.’”
“Undisputed Truth,” filmed earlier this month during Tyson’s shows in New York for a premiere later this year, features the one-time heavyweight champ recounting his life’s highs and lows, including his troubled youth, landmark boxing career, key people in his life, controversies, prison stint, family and new beginnings.
“It’s the most courageous thing I’ve ever seen in my life,” Spike continued, “because I couldn’t do it, and most people couldn’t do it, where you just go up there, no bullsh*t, no lies, no spin, and talk about the great things you’ve done and about the not-so-great things you’ve done. And tell them both with honesty. I want to thank HBO for letting us do this. Because, as you know, when a Broadway play is over, poof, it’s gone. Thank you HBO for letting us document this — this man on stage.”
After all that, Tyson responded with this…
