*The first ever all African American female relay team, put together by fitness guru Donna Richardson Joyner, will run in the 32nd Annual “Hood To Coast Relay” in Portland, Oregon over Labor Day Weekend.
She named the team Witness to Fitness after a book she released earlier this year. Their overnight long distance run is considered the largest relay race in the world.
“No African American team has ever completed the full 199 mile Hood to Coast Relay. Not only is my team an all African American team, but it’s also an all female team,” Joyner, the author of the book, “Witness To Fitness,” Richardson Joyner told AlwaysAList.com.
Joyner’s sisterhood of runners include singer Syleena Johnson (TV One’s “R&B Divas“), actress Nicole Ari Parker (“Soul Food”), fitness guru Adrienne Galloway, news producer Elizabeth Flores (NBC Miami), dentist Edwina Collins, personal trainer Jena Murphy, professional nurse Shanae Moody, housewife Charita Upkins, government executive Carra Wallace, school teacher Ngozi Uwah, and housewife Holly Robinson.
“It’s a diverse group of women and we’re so excited to embark on this journey together,” added Joyner. “This is a big deal and my girls are ready! We’re pumped up, prayed up and in the best shape of our lives!”
The “Hood To Coast” relay in Portland will have more than 13,000 participants in the run and raise money for the American Cancer Society. The event overall attracts more than 65,000 people. A movie about the relay was released in theaters in 2011.
