*Many of you may recall when basketball player Jason Collins came out of the closet last spring in a cover story for Sports Illustrated. Afterwards he was met with widespread praise for knocking down barriers in the world of professional sports.
When he came out, Collins was a center for the Washington Wizards and now the 34-year-old is a free agent … and unsigned. Training camp for the new NBA season has already started, but the player told the New York Times that he has yet to get a call from any teams.
According to the Times, the reason he hasn’t been picked up is because he’s “a marginal player with modest career statistics nearing the end of his career.” but some have wondered if it’s because he’s being shunned because he came out.
“You don’t want to speculate — I don’t go there,” he said while eating at a cafe in the Brentwood section of Los Angeles. “I feel there are players in the league right now that, quite frankly, I’m better than.”
