*Actress Julianne Hough thought she’d dress up this Halloween as “Crazy Eyes” from the Netflix series “Orange is the New Black.”
Only problem is…she’s white, the character is African American, and she darkened her face with makeup.
Soon, the image was everywhere, and the “Dancing With the Stars” vet was quickly branded a racist for donning blackface. Hough says she had no idea her getup was offensive.
In addition to the makeup, she sported an orange jumpsuit and a name tag that read “Crazy Eyes,” trying to look like this…
Bloggers, however, were in disbelief, and Twitter users swiftly condemned the act. A sample tweet: “No, Julianne Hough. Just NO. I can’t believe ‘blackface is not okay’ is a conversation we still need to have,” wrote user @danie_bagel.
By Saturday, Hough was apologizing on Twitter.
“I am a huge fan of the show Orange is the New Black, actress Uzo Aduba, and the character she has created. It certainly was never my intention to be disrespectful or demeaning to anyone in any way. I realize my costume hurt and offended people and I truly apologize,” Hough tweeted.
