ray charles*There was a time when music mattered in America especially during a crisis.

Many have asked the question: “What would singers like Sam Cooke say, or Marvin Gaye, or John Lennon, or Curtis Mayfield, or Woody Guthrie, and so, so many others about what’s going on right now with American government.

Then I was listening to this song by the late great Ray Charles, ‘Dixie Moon.’ It’s apolitical, and yet so powerful in how he so masterfully blended Country/Gospel/Rhythm & Blues into a cake where everyone can get a slice of a common flavor, and be in agreement of very good taste! He was so multifaceted. He once sang ‘America The Beautiful.’

A close source told me he was so bent on recording the song; he put up his own money to make it happen against the naysayers. Need I say more? He loved America! And now take a listen to Ray Charles’  ‘Grandfatherly Voice’ on  Dixie Moon…

Dixie Moon

As recorded by Ray Charles:

The sun’s goin’ down I can’t hardly wait
to be alone in just the right place
with you…ooh baby with you
No way on earth to keep us apart
when shadows fall we know our hearts
will be under the spell of that Dixie Moon

Warm southern winds caressing our skin
as we reach for the stars
Love has no beginning and love has no end
when you’ve gone this far
and the night is in bloom with honeysuckle perfume
and that Dixie Moon

and the restless cone pines sway like our minds
‘neath that Dixie Moon

[Music Interlude]

This time of night all over the world
so many moons and so many girls
but there’s only one you
and one Dixie Moon

Don’t need no dictionary to explain in any way
what I hear in you whisper…
what you mean when you say…ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh…

Warm southern winds caressing our skin
as we reach for the stars
Love has no beginning and love has no end
when you’ve gone this far
and the night is in bloom with honeysuckle perfume
and that Dixie Moon

and the restless cone pines sway like our minds
‘neath that Dixie Moon

Night in bloom with honeysuckle perfume
and that Dixie Moon
