kendrick lamar (boxing gloves)*Tuesday night, BET premiered its 9thth annual BET Hip Hop Awards event that was taped in the ATL last month.

The star studded event hosted by Snoop Dogg honors artists who, as Drake is infamously quoted, “started from the bottom.”

One of the most notable memories of this award show was new rapper Kendrick Lamar’s performance in which he went straight for the jugular dissing none other than Drake.  Drake, who won four awards including Best Hip Hop collabo, Best Club Banger, Best Hip Hop Video and The People’s Champ award, was not in attendance at this year’s awards show and hasn’t yet responded, but I’m sure there will be some words exchanged as Hip Hop always seems to thrive off of controversy.

MC Lyte was honored by receiving the “I AM HIP HOP” awards by none other than female rapper, Eve, for pioneering the Hip Hop game with her lyrics and dedication for making Hip Hop a credible genre in the music industry.

One of the best things about the Hip Hop awards are always the cyphers, a time where rappers get back to the basics and spit lyrics over a beat. This year was no exception. New artists as well as veterans took to the lyrical showcase to show their freestyle talent. Lil Kim made a surprise appearance to let the rap game know, she hasn’t lost her touch.  ASAP Rocky, Jon Conner and even the Hollywood’s House Husband stars appeared to make their memorable name in Hip Hop History.

Bone Thugs and Harmony made a surprise appearance performing one of their infamous songs, “Tha Crossroads” which brought everyone back to 1995 when the song was released. You can always expect something special at the award show and this year was no exception.

Overall, the BET Hip Hop Awards has come to be the premier event for hip hop. Next year, I’m sure it will be just as good , if not better since, BET always has a way of outdoing itself
