*Eddie Willis, original Motown session guitarist, will be coming to Detroit for a very rare intimate appearance live at the Northern Lights Lounge on Saturday, November 16th at 7:00pm for a fundraiser and tribute to The Funk Brothers. All of the proceeds from the show will go to benefit Eddie, who has struggled with the effects of polio for several years.
As one of several guitarists with The Funk Brothers, Eddie Willis’ playing has permeated countless iconic hits by The Four Tops, Temptations, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Diana Ross & The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Martha Reeves & The Vandellas, Jackie Wilson, Mary Wells, Junior Walker & The All Stars, Gladys Knight & The Pips, The Jackson 5, The Spinners, The Isley Brothers, and many many more.
The event will include a discussion with Eddie and a Q&A with the audience, plus a concert of deep cuts and big hits featuring Eddie and longtime members of the Funk Brothers touring band including Delbert Nelson, Donna Curtain, Treaty Womack, Spider Webb, Robert Jones, and Ralphe Armstrong. Also performing will be The Drew Schultz Funk Machine, Cynthia Davis of Leilani, Spyder Turner, Melvin Davis, and more. Several legends of the Detroit Soul scene will recount stories and memories of what it was like to record and perform with The Funk Brothers. As a very special guest, fellow Motown guitar player Dennis Coffey will be performing. As the first musician to bring the wah-wah pedal to Motown, Dennis can be heard alongside Eddie and The Funk Brothers on countless legendary hit songs including “Papa Was A Rolling Stone,” “Just My Imagination,” “Cloud Nine,” and his own hit song “Scorpio.”
There will be a $15 cover with a suggested donation, as well as an auction for several signed pieces of Funk Brothers memorabilia. Tribute to The Funk Brothers / Benefit for Eddie Willis on Saturday, November 16th. 7:00pm showtime at the Northern Lights Lounge.
