*“Boardwalk Empire” star Michael K. Williams and “Sparkle” star Carmen Ejogo are among the actors joining the sequel to “The Purge,” notes The Hollywood Reporter. The original was set in a world where once a year, there’s a 12-hour period when all crime is allowed and condoned.
“Friday Night Lights” actor Zach Gilford and “A Perfect Getaway” actress Kiele Sanchez were also added to the sequel, which will hit theaters on Friday, June 20, 2014, under returning writer-director James DeMonaco.
It was recently announced that Frank Grillo will star.
“The Purge,” made on a budget of $3 million, opened in theaters in June, earning a stunning $34 million in its debut, setting a new record for original R-rated horror (that record was later broken by “The Conjuring ”). The Ethan Hawke-starrer went on to earn $89.3 million worldwide.
Williams is known for his roles as Omar Little on HBO’s “The Wire” and Chalky White on “Boardwalk Empire.” His recent film credits include “12 Years a Slave” and the upcoming “Robocop pic.”
