*This year’s edition of the annual celebrity basketball tournament put on to raise money for cancer research was indeed a huge success.
The event this year was produced by Sam Watson and Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr. and was held at Cal State Northridge.
There were approximately 3500 in attendance who all came to see the likes of Cedric The Entertainer, Jamie Foxx, “Sugar” Shane Mosley, Peter “Kid Chocalate” Quillan, Danny Garcia, singer Kelly Rowland, and rapper The Game compete against one another on teams led by Marcus and Brandon Watson.
This event was a lot bigger than last year’s which was held at Westchester High and now I hear that they plan to do it next year at even a larger venue ( possibly at the Staples Center).
Our hats go off to Floyd Mayweather and Sam Watson for putting on a fantastic event, and we would like to wish them well in 2014.
In other boxing news, Adrian ” The Problem” Broner got his problem solved last weekend by Marcos Maidana down in San Antonio, Texas as he couldn’t quite figure out how to deal with a guy as relentless and focused on putting a spanking on him.
He dished out a lot of trash talking leading up to this fight that he ultimately couldn’t back up in the ring.
From the opening bell Maidana came in and established his position that he wasn’t taking any prisoners and dropped Broner not only in the first, but also in the eighth although near the end of that round a point was taken from him for intentionally head butting Broner.
This was indeed an exciting bout to watch as Broner tried to make a fight out of it near the end but it was too little, too late.
All three judges awarded it a unanimous decision for Maidana who was declared the new champion.
There had to be a lot of lessons learned from this one and I’m sure that Broner will do much better if they have a rematch. As I always say, we’ll see what happens.
I hear now that Vitali Klitschko has been declared champion emeritus by the WBC President Don Suliman due to the fact that he has been embroiled in another fight within his country of Ukraine. He a has announced his intent to run for President in the year of 2015 and has been a leader of the opposition against the current government that has clearly held his focus, although the door has been left open for him to return to the ring whenever he chooses to do so.
The number one contender for the WBC heavyweight belt is Bermane Stiverne.
As I always say, we’ll see what happens.
