*Besides Pharrell’s hat, the other big takeaway from Sunday’s Grammy Awards was the mass wedding ceremony that took place during Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ performance of their equality anthem, “Same Love” with Mary Lambert and Trombone Shorty.
Queen Latifah, who was recently deputized by Los Angeles County to legally conduct wedding ceremonies, married 33 couples in the aisle of the Staples Center, which was staged to resemble a chapel complete with stained glass windows.
”We are gathered here to celebrate love and harmony in every key and every color,” Latifah told the audience.
Following the nuptials, Madonna – clad in a white suit – stepped through a neon alter to sing her 1986 hit “Open Your Heart” to the newlyweds, which included Ryan’s sister Laura and her boyfriend.
Backstage after the performance, Latifah told the AP, “You can call me Queen Commish for a little longer.”
The rapper-turned-talk show host said she’s not a permanently ordained minister and her special powers expired at midnight.
“It was something I took very seriously,” she said. “That is someone’s life commitment to one another, you want to make sure you do it right. That’s what sunk in for me.”
“To have your wedding in front of 100 million people is pretty momentous,” Latifah said. “I can say I was here and that will not leave me. I look forward to dashing off and signing all their wedding certificates.”
