12 years dvd

*“12 Years a Slave” will be released on Digital HD on Feb. 18 and on DVD and Blu-ray on March 4 — two days after the 86th Academy Awards – and accompanied in those formats by several educational extras, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

THR posted a teaser of one of them: “A Historical Portrait,” a documentary about how the film came together and the book that inspired it, featuring readings from the latter by the star of the former, Chiwetel Ejiofor.  [Scroll down to watch a teaser.]

The special feature will appear solely on the film’s Blu-ray edition.

Meanwhile, both the DVD and the Blu-Ray will offer the segments “The Team,” which profiles McQueen’s creative partners on the film, and “The Score,” which chronicles Hans Zimmer’s composition of the music that plays over the film.

“12 Years a Slave,” which appeared on over 250 top 10 lists at the end of 2013, won this year’s best picture (drama) Golden Globe Award and is nominated for nine Academy Awards, including best picture, best director (Steve McQueen), best actor (Ejiofor), best supporting actor (Michael Fassbender), best supporting actress (Lupita Nyong’o) and best adapted screenplay (John Ridley).
