John-SingletonTupac-Shakur

*John Singleton has signed on to direct, re-write, and produce Morgan Creek Productions and Emmett/Furla/Oasis Films’ Tupac Shakur biopic, which is set to begin production this summer, reports Deadline.

The long-gestating pic about the late iconic rapper-actor got renewed momentum last Fall when Emmett/Furla/Oasis Films joined Morgan Creek as co-financier.

Singleton who directed Tupac in 1993’s “Poetic Justice,” will work with Ed Gonzalez and Jeremy Haft to revise their original greenlit script, according to Deadline.

“Tupac was the guy who I planned to do a lifetime of films with,” said Singleton. “His passing deeply affected my life…as well as countless people in this world. …His life story is as important to my generation.”

Pac’s mother Afeni Shakur, who has acted as guardian of her son’s artistic legacy since his death, will have an executive producer credit on the project, which has access to the rapper’s extensive musical catalog.
