*Louis Gossett Jr., Cuba Gooding Jr. and Jane Alexander will star in the six-hour miniseries adaptation of “The Book of Negroes,” based on the novel by Lawrence Hill.

Aunjanue Ellis, Lyriq Bent, Ben Chaplin and Allan Hawco will also star in the production, set to air on BET in the U.S. and Canada’s CBC.

“The Book of Negroes” follows the life of Aminata Diallo, who, after being kidnapped by slave traders in West Africa and subsequently enslaved in South Carolina, tries to navigate her way to freedom.

Principal photography begins this week in South Africa and will continue in Nova Scotia in the spring.

The miniseries is co-written by Hill and Clement Virgo (“The Wire”). Virgo will also direct.
