*The dispute between the children of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. has expanded into the well-being of the late civil rights icon’s Bible and Nobel Peace Prize medal.
Reuters reports that a judge in the case ruled Wednesday that the items be moved to a court-controlled safety deposit box with the judge holding the keys.
In late January, the King estate sued Bernice King as they sought an emergency court order forcing her to return the Nobel Prize and Bible.
According to the estate, Bernice King signed a 1995 agreement giving control of her father’s possessions to the estate. The brothers want to sell the medal and the Bible, while Bernice King opposes the action.
“While I love my brothers dearly, this latest decision by them is extremely troubling,” she said in a statement after her brothers filed a lawsuit against her for control of the items. “Our Father MUST be turning in his grave.”
King’s Nobel Peace Prize medal is currently in a bank safety deposit box, while the Bible, which President Obama used in his second inauguration ceremony, is at the Martin Luther King Center for Nonviolent Change in Atlanta, said Eric Barnum, Bernice King’s lawyer, who added that his client considers the Bible and Nobel Peace Prize medal as “sacred.”
