*A gang of new TV castings were announced today.
TBS has hired Deon Cole for the comedy pilot “Tribeca,” directed by Steve Carell; Edi Gathegi of “Twilight” fame joins TNT’s supernatural medical drama “Proof”; Malcolm Barrett joins NBC’s comedy pilot “Mission Control” and “Revolution” actor Derek Webster has booked ABC alien drama pilot “The Visitors.”
Co-written by Carell and his wife, Nancy Carell, TBS’ “Tribeca” is a satirical look at a police procedural anchored by Angie Tribeca (Rashida Jones), an outspoken 10-year veteran of the LAPD’s elite RHCU (Really Heinous Crimes Unit). Cole will play Officer DJ Tanner, head of the K-9 unit. He most recently hosted his own TBS series “Deon Cole’s Black Box.”
Actress Kyra Sedgwick executive produces TNT’s “Proof,” which centers on a skeptical, hard science, female surgeon who is persuaded to investigate cases of reincarnation. Edi Gathegi will play Zed, a Sudanese hospital intern tasked with finding proof of life after death. He recently wrapped “Shiva & May” and the untitled Cameron Crowe Hawaii project.
Barrett and Jonathan Slavin play scientists in NBC’s “Mission Control.” Set in 1962, the comedy examines what happens when a strong woman butts heads with a macho astronaut in the race to land on the moon. Malcolm Barrett will play Arthur, an engineer on the woman’s crew. The Universal TV-produced comedy from executive producers Adam McKay and Will Ferrell that will take on the tone of “Anchorman.” Barrett was most recently was seen in the 2014 Sundance movie “Dear White People.”
“The Visitors,” from Steven Spielberg’s Amblin TV, chronicles the race against the clock to defeat an unseen alien enemy out to destroy the world. Derek Webster plays Jessup Rollins, an FBI agent with two disciplinary reprimands on his record and a past of difficult behavior. He’ll also recur on NBC’s midseason series “The Night Shift.”
