beyonce ban bossy ad

*Beyonce and Condoleezza Rice are part of a new effort by Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg’s Lean In Foundation to redefine the term “bossy” when it applies to women in charge.

Jennifer Garner, Jane Lynch and Diane von Furstenberg also appear in the new PSA released today (March 10) via YouTube. The video notes that by middle school, girls are less interested in leadership than boys, because they’re afraid of the negatively-associated label.

At just over a minute long, the video shows Lynch commenting, “I think the word ‘bossy’ is just a squasher,” and clutching her “Glee” character’s signature megaphone, and ends with Bey declaring, “I’m not bossy. I’m the boss.”

Additionally, NASCAR champ Jimmie Johnson, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, Girl Scouts USA CEO Anna Maria Chavez, and Sandberg herself appear in the Lifetime-donated PSA.

Sandberg’s “Ban Bossy” campaign pairs the Facebook COO with Rice and Chavez in launching banbossy.com, a website with tools to help equip young girls with leadership skills, and tips for parents and teachers to help them construct more positive and encouraging conversations about female leadership. The site also hosts an online pledge to ban the word.
