*George Tillman Jr. is in negotiations to direct Fox 2000’s adaptation of the Nicholas Sparks novel “The Longest Ride,” reports Variety.

The book follows a young couple whose lives intertwine with an old man looking back on the relationship he had with a lost love.

Fox 2000 acquired the novel after a heavy bidding war last February when the studio outbid Warner Bros. and Relativity. Given the success of previous Sparks’ novels like “Safe Haven,” “The Lucky One” and “The Notebook,” Fox views this as a high priority with hopes of similar results at the box office, notes Variety.

Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey are producing through their Temple Hill banner with Craig Bolotin adapting the script.

The pic is set to hit theaters on April 3, 2015.

Tillman most recently helmed “The Inevitable Defeat of Mister & Pete.”
