*As OWN programming turns toward more advertiser-friendly entertainment fare, the network announced Tuesday that “Our America with Lisa Ling” will be cancelled following its upcoming fifth season, to premiere Thursday, May 29 at 10/9c.
The series, which probed underreported stories across the United States, will spend its 10-episode final bow exploring gun violence in Philadelphia, ADHD in American families, the largest foster care system in the country, criminal informants, the HIV epidemic in the African American community and the story of a woman held captive for months.
Also, Lisa will follow-up on past stories, including the three individuals on personal journeys to change their gender, and two young women originally featured on an episode about teen mothers. In addition, she revisits the controversial case of registered sex offender, Travis Iosue, who spent 16 years in prison for touching the breast of a young girl.
“It has been an honor to be part of the launch and success of OWN and I am exceptionally grateful to the network and to Oprah for allowing me to produce the show of my dreams,” said Ling in a statement. “I have never been more proud of anything I’ve ever done in my career and hope that our shows have enriched people and provoked them to think differently and with compassion about those who inhabit Our America.”
The final season will kick off with an episode titled “Fighting Satan.” Many Americans believe that the devil is alive and well, which has sparked a growing movement in churches to fight him head on. Ling travels to Georgia and Florida to visit ministries that practice “deliverance” – where faith and the power of Christ are called upon to cast Satan’s demons from the emotionally tormented.
