*In her first appearance on “Late Show with David Letterman” since leaving rehab, Lindsay Lohan and the host Wednesday night commiserated about the struggles of sobriety, and prank called their mutual friend, Oprah Winfrey.
Letterman, who announced last week that he’ll retire in 2015, made a rare comment about his own struggles with alcohol, saying, “I’m an alcoholic, I drank myself every night” and said to the actress, “It’s so nice to…have your control back, isn’t it?” Lohan nodded, saying “Yeah…My life is in a good place.”
The pair then talked about Winfrey, who produces her OWN documentary “Lindsay.” Winfrey wasn’t feeling Letterman for years after appearing on his former NBC late night show in 1989. At the time, she said she felt Letterman had turned the audience against her. They finally made up during Winfrey’s 2005 appearance on “The Late Show,” when he personally escorted her to the premiere of “The Color Purple” on Broadway.
During Lohan’s appearance Wednesday, she asked, “Should we call Oprah?”
In what came off as a planned skit, Letterman says no, but relents after Lohan chants “Op-rah! Op-rah!,” and gets the audience to chime in.
When Winfrey picks up, Letterman says in a high-pitched voice, “Yes, could I speak to Oprah Winfrey, please?…Hi, this is Lindsay Lohan’s secretary.”
“Who is this?” Winfrey asks pointedly. Letterman quickly breaks character and reveals, “It’s Dave, Oprah, it’s Dave.” Winfrey laughs off the prank call, saying, “Oh my God…Very good, Dave! The David Letterman who’s retiring?”
By the end of the conversation, Oprah had Lindsay in tears, praising her attempt to stay sober amid the cameras and chaos of shooting the reality show.
