* (New York, NY) – Reverend Al Sharpton and the National Action Network (NAN) will host its 16th Annual Keepers of the Dream Awards Wednesday, April 9.
The awards – given each year in April to mark the anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s death, will honor those who have continued to advocate for the principles for which Dr. King gave his life.
The Keepers of the Dream awards are given by members of the civil rights community who have committed themselves to fairness and racial harmony.

The first annual Keepers of the Dream Awards Gala was held by National Action Network (NAN) in 1999. The event was hosted by Reverend Al Sharpton and Martin Luther King III, son of the late great Civil Rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., at the Empire State Ballroom at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York. The Keepers of the Dream Awards were established to honor the legacy of one of the greatest men in history through the recognition of those who continued to promote the doctrines that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave his life for, in their respective fields of work. This year’s annual Keepers of the Dream Awards Gala will be held during National Action Network’s National Convention on Wednesday, April 9th, 2014 at The Sheraton New York Hotel and Towers from 8-11 p.m. The program will be co-hosted by Rev. Sharpton and Wendy Williams. First Lady of New York City, Chirlane McCray, will assist during the presentation of NAN’s former Communications Director for over fourteen years award, Rachel Noerdlinger.
