RGIII & Dale Earnhardt Jr.*Robert Griffin III is temporarily trading in his football for a vehicle.

The LA Times reports that the Washington Redskins quarterback was recruited to drive the pace car for NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series race in Richmond, Va., on Saturday night. Griffin’s participation in the event came courtesy of his friend Dale Earnhardt Jr., who utilized Twitter to get things in motion.

The Daytona 500 winner tweeted a month ago ago that perhaps Griffin could be grand marshal at the race, which will take place at Richmond International Raceway. It was then that Raceway President Dennis Bickmeier asked Earnhardt if Griffin could drive the pace car that leads the 43-car field to the green flag.

“Of course he can,” Earnhardt tweeted in response.

On Wednesday, the raceway said that Griffin would go through some pace-car training with Earnhardt as well as spend time this weekend with NFL Hall of Famer and former Redskins coach Joe Gibbs, who owns one of NASCAR’s leading teams.

Realizing how Griffin’s involvement could be a win-win for everyone, Earnhardt tweeted Wednesday that that “This will be great for fans of both sports.”

For Griffin, in turn, sent out a tweet which mentioned that he was “honored to have the opportunity.”
