*What a great night of boxing in Carson, Calif., put on by Oscar De La Hoya’s Goldenboy Promotions out at the StubHub( formely the Home Depot Center).
And what a match between John Molina and Lucas Matthysse as these two guys rumbled with each other from the opening bell. Molina wasted no time in this one and got in a knockdown in the second against Mattessye who was a game opponet throughout the bout landing crisp clean shots against Molina who dropped him again in the fifth round.
But Mattyssye came back in the eight and knocked down Molina with a vicious barrage of punches and seemed to get a second wind as the fight went on. And in the tenth dropped Molina again for a standing eight count from the referee before finally kocking him out in 22 seconds in dramactic fashion early in the eleventh. This bout is definately candidate for fight of the year folks, no doubt. Molina showed more heart than Carter has liver pills and folks, this bout reminded me of one of those Rocky movies.
After having the advantage in the early rounds, as the fight progressed the tide started turning from Molina and began to be in favor of Mattyssye who continued to land the more devastating shots to the head and body. But in spite of all this, Molina kept fighting back and never gave up until he was finally dropped for good 22 seconds into the eleventh round.
Let’s hope that all the remaining sceduled fights that are set to take place in 2014 turn out like this one did. Our hats go off to Goldenboy Promotions, and it was good to see Oscar De La Hoya the other day leading the press conference for this event. He looked great and was very spirited and vocal about the direction he’d like to see the company take in the future. He was quoted as saying that he has extended the olive branch out to rival promoter, Bob Arum and that he’d like to explore co-promoting fights with him because it would be good for boxing, and that he feels that he owes this to him for all that he’s done for his career. Although there’s no doubt that some people within his company may have opposition to this, the bottom line is that he is the president of the company and he can do whatever he wants to do. As I always say, we’ll see what happens.
In the main event we saw Kieth Thurman go against Julio Diaz in another competitve match. Except in this one it didn’t last very long as Diaz couldn’t answer the bell going into the fourth round as he was hit with a devastating shot to the ribs and did not get off his stool. Thurman now says he’s ready to go against the best in the welterweight divison which is full of so much talent. With that said, we all know that the guys at the top are Mayweather, Pacquiao, Porter and Bradley any of whom would be an excellent opponent for Thurman. The thing I like about him is that he can really box and scrap with anyone in front of him. And who knows, a match with Danny Garcia could be next, we shall see.
Mayweather goes against Maidana next weekend at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas in a match that could be even more exciting than we could anticipate. It will be telecast live on Showtime pay per view and promoted by Mayweather Promotions in association with Goldenboy.
And the following weekend on May 10 Bermane Stiverne and Chris ” The Nightmare” Arreola get together again this time for the vacant WBC heavyweight title. The last time these two got together it was a title elimination bout and it was Stiverne who was declared the winner in a very grueling bout. Arreola was at the fight last night in Carson, and he really looked good. Let’s hope he’ll be that way on the 10th. This one is set to take place at the Galen Center on the USC campus and will be telecast live on ESPN. As I always say, we’ll see what happens.
