*First lady Michelle Obama is expected at the Metropolitan Museum today for the opening of its newly renovated costume center, reports the AP.
The first lady is scheduled to cut the ribbon on the new $40 million Anna Wintour Costume Center, named for the longtime editor of Vogue magazine.
A new exhibit opens there Thursday featuring the work of Charles James, who died in 1978. Although not widely known by the public, his glamorous, sculpted couture gowns were influential. His clients included Marlene Dietrich and Gypsy Rose Lee.
The museum hosts its annual gala ball for the Costume Institute tonight.
