*Justin Simien‘s highly-anticipated feature directorial debut “Dear White People” is coming to theaters this fall!

The film won distribution in March from Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions after winning the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Breakthrough Talent at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival.

And now the film’s first teaser trailer is finally here!

The film is based on Simien’s own experiences at a predominantly white university.

“Dear White People” focuses on four black students at an Ivy League school where a riot breaks out over a popular “African American themed” party hosted by white students.

Ultimately, the film focuses on racial identity in a so-called post-racial society.

Tyler Williams, Tessa Thompson, Teyonah Parris, and Brandon Bell all star in the film while Effie T. Brown, Julia Lebedev, Angel Lopez, Ann Le and Lena Waithe produced. Stephanie Allain and Leonid Lebedev executive produced the film.

“Justin Simien is a funny, fresh and current voice with his finger on the Millennials’ pulse,” said Roadside’s Howard Cohen. “His crowd-pleasing Dear White People took Sundance by storm, with its sly and extremely topical satire sparking conversations about our supposed ‘post-racial,’ 21st century America.”

The film opens up on Friday, Oct. 17, 2014.
