*Steven Spielberg recently spoke to us about his other upcoming television series.
While much attention has been given to his Halle Berry science fiction vehicle “Extant,” debuting July 9 on CBS, the filmmaker’s FOX drama “Red Band Society” – also starring an Oscar winning, African American actress transitioning from film to television – has been quietly inching toward its scheduled fall debut following “Extant’s” summer run.
Octavia Spencer stars as the head nurse in a pediatric hospital, where a group of teen patients lean on each other to deal with the serious illnesses that brought them there. (The “red band” refers to the rubber bracelets patients wear during a surgical procedure.)
Spielberg likens the show to another Fox series in which outcast teens must learn to rely on each other for strength and acceptance.
“’Red Band Society’ is in that great spirit of the successful Fox shows like ‘Glee,’” he said. “They’re kind of teen soaps, but with real issues and real problems and real humor – almost a dark, kind of hospital humor which is the way children’s hospitals are.”
Below, Spielberg explains how he knows so much about children’s hospitals and the way young patients often empower each other.
“Red Band Society” will air Wednesdays (9:00 – 10:00 ET/ PT) this fall on FOX.
