*A new Prince album may be in the works, featuring a rap track with Rita Ora and a ballad inspired by the #ThisCouldBeUsButYouPlayin Internet meme.
Speaking with the Minnesota Star Tribune, Prince didn’t reveal a title or release date for his new material but said he was frustrated over how slowly his label, Warner Bros, is working to get his new album out.
“Every No. 1 song, every Top 10 song, every song in the Top 40 is at least six months old,” he said. “We should be able to make music and put it out now.”
On a recent night, someone from Prince’s camp called the Star Tribune’s Jon Bream to the singer’s house at 1 a.m. to hear new music. Of the songs played, one included a track with Ora, described as a “rare rap song on which the music was as aggressive and menacing as the rapping.”
As well, Prince explained the ballad “This Could Be Us” was inspired by an incarnation of the #ThisCouldBeUsButYouPlayin meme of him and Apollonia riding on a motorcycle in the 1984 movie “Purple Rain.”
Bream described the song as “a joyful ballad with some ecstatic Prince vocalizing.”
Prince has not released a new album since 2009’s Target-exclusive “LotusFlow3r,” which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. His album with his band 3rdEyeGirl, “Plectrum Electrum,” was announced earlier this year but has not been released yet.
