*With five days left in the “Reading Rainbow” Kickstarter fundraising campaign, Hollywood producer Seth MacFarlane has pledged to match the remaining donations up to $1 million.
“The money that Seth has pledged is for schools,” Reading Rainbow host LeVar Burton explained in a video. “Every dollar we’re raising right now gives us the ability to give the ‘Reading Rainbow’ product away to schools in need.”
The “Reading Rainbow” Kickstarter’s original goal was $1 million, but after quickly surpassing the total, Burton aimed to raise $5 million to expand the product’s reach and availability. As of Friday morning, more than $4 million has been pledged to revive the children’s literacy program.
“Reading Rainbow” aired on public television from 1983 through 2006 and was re-launched as a tablet app in 2012. Burton plans to create a version specifically for schools, which will be made available for free for up to 12,500 classrooms in need with MacFarlane’s help.
